Hello! Do you actually have more than one sound card installed in your computer such as an onboard sound chip and an add-in sound card?
If you really do, I would open Device Manager, go to Sound, video and game controllers, click the + to open the list, right-click any listed devices, and then click Remove in the context menu. Afterwards, shut down, remove any add-in sound cards, then restart and tell us what happens.
If you don't have an add-in card, just remove the sound devices in device manager, restart, and repost.

On the monitor there should be buttons- one of them should be a menu and you can adjust the brightness and contrast of the monitor. If it is still dark, then you can try to adjust the gamma on the advanced properties of the video card.... if it has them.
But from what you say, your monitor red gun may have gone, in which case you need a new monitor (not economical to fix). Test the monitor by trying it on another computer... if you get the same result, you have a dying monitor.

Possibly... there are some checks, the first one is the easy one, put the monitor on another computer.... if it works ok we have to go digging. It is possible that the monitor died coincidently.
The monitor plug to the computer may not be firmly... I get that problem with my monitor because I have a dvi to dsub adapter which is heavy and tends to work itself out of the socket.
XP possible problems AGP drivers (part of the motherboard drivers) need updating, Video card drivers need updating, monitor requires proper drivers, refresh rate and/or resolution (not colour depth) is too high for the monitor to handle properly.

On checking your motherboard/video card, xp knows how to run these... so no updating there.
What's the make and model of the monitor so I can check the specs?
The resolution is found when you right click on the desktop somewhere (not an icon) and click properties. Then the settings tab...What is that set to 800x600?
The refresh rate you get to from the resolution page... click the advanced button and click on the monitor tab - what is the number shown 60hz? What options are available from the drop down arrow?
