    Scratch on cd

OK folks when I insert a disk in my dvd drive and if it has small scratches
My computer acts strange and hangs up. I would go to my computer and look at drives and dvd drive I can right click and it would just hang. I would
control alt delete and still hang. I have a pentium 4 2gig with 1 gig sdram
intel D845WN mother board, 400 watt power supply, 3cdroms DVD player,
cd burner ,DVD burner. Hang Is when hour glass just sits there for long period of time. I really do not know how long? I just say sh t and press reset button
once computer starts I pull out cd and all is back to normal. When all is locked
my DVD drive light stays on all the way when I hit reset button. The DVD drive is a sony DDU 1621 any Ideas would be great.

Is your DVD player a burner? If so, record the "bad" dvd/cd and try the new one again.

This isnt for all but on some cd/dvd' small scratches can be removed from the actual disk by using a small amount of toothpaste+water and a circular polishing.
This iwll leave a lot of swirl marks but it can enable you to at least copy the cd so that you have a working copy

I have 3 CD ROMS sony dvd player, mitsumi 48x cd writer, HP DVD
writer 300n. When I am backing up a DVD is when I would have problems with hanging, also an occasional music cd. It acts like the drive wants to read whats on the disk and cannot let go.

WElp, don't scratch your disks, put them away. Yes the drive will try to read and read - it's called error correction....
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

With reference to scratched Cd's and DVDs I had the same problem with a music CD as I tried to add it to my music library it got stuck on two tracks.

So I invested in the following item from my local PC shop.

Skip Dr Disc repair system. And it work 100%.

More information can be found at the following link

I hope that this is off help to everyone.

They must be some pretty heft scratches... most drives will time out in a minute or two.

Yes did time out and moved on to the next track and ripped that one to the library.

I do not think that the problem was the scratches, I had previously used a cleaning solution which was supposed to help protect the discs, and over time it wore off.
