remote desktop disconnected
Motorola modem
Linksys WRT54GP2 router
Windows XP Professional
2 days ago, I was able to connect to my home pc via XP Remote Desktop. The day after, I couldn't. All I get is the error, "The client could not connect to the remote computer."
I know everything is online because I can still connect to the router's configuration page remotely & I can connect to my Linux pc through Putty. Any ideas why I'm not connecting to the WinXP computer? Thanks.

Nothing changed on the XP box? Firewall hasn't been activated without you realising?
Nothing changed on the Linksys? I assume you have port 3389 forwarded to the XP box?
Does your pc pick up a DHCP address or is it fixed IP? If DHCP check that it hasn't grabbed a different address which would make the port forwarding you created go to the wrong place as it were.

Remote Desktop allowed through XP firewall.

Ok, and I'm guessing you've double checked that the port forwarding is still there and remote desktop is activated?
Where are you trying to connect from; is it the same location as before? Possible something has changed from the origin point rather than it being a problem at yours. Can you try connecting from another location also?

Everything on my end hasn't changed, I'm still trying to connect from the same connection, and I resolved this issue last night by rebuilding the connections. One thing I learned from working in tech support is that you're sometimes better off starting over instead of repairing. Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm sure I'll get the same amount of help on my next problem. Have a good holiday.

Everything was working fine for 3 days then it fails again.
There has to be something that's self-terminating.

Ok, is this always from the same place that you are connecting? Have you tried from an alternative?

I usually connect to my home pc from work. A friend tried connecting from his home pc to mine & couldn't connect too.

Anything in the router logs?
Maybe try using VNC (you'll have to forward port 5900) to see if the same thing happens with it after a few days.
There doesn't appear to be any firmware updates from Linksys for this router; are you using the VoIP functionality and have a provider specific firmware installed on it?

When you say "rebuilding the connections," what did you do exactly?
To each his/her own.
