Post Shaky video capture

Hi, I've got a problem with my new dv camera and capture. It seems that no matter what video editor I use, the playback from my captured video is choppy and not smooth like the playback from the video tape. I'm using Win ME on an Athlon 750 T-bird, an ATI DV wonder card with an ATI rage fury pro video. Could this an editing software issue or do I need a faster processor or could it be something else I'm not aware of. My new panasonic pv-dv701 works very well and the card link for stills works just fine too, but movie messenger, Ulead 5.0 and windows moviemaker all have the same issue when it comes to capturing the video. Any ideas???

First assess whether the capture is at fault or the playback... burn a cd with a file and play it back on another machine.. if the other machine plays it fine, then its your playback.

If the playback is bad on another machine I would be looking at drivers, background applications running at the time of capture and available ram.

Do you have enough RAM for the application? Video requires a good deal of RAM

I got 384 meg of RAM and I used End It All to close all the other running programs and not much difference. I have sucessfully burned a VCD using the capture jack on my video card , then using Nero to burn it, but to do this with dv is a step backward. I should get smooth capture using firewire shouldn't I?

Did you do a test capture and burn to mpg2 and play it on another machine to assess whether its the capture or the playback?
