Oh I hated that. My Birthday is Jan 8th (2 Wks after christmas) and I used to get that all the time. My grandmother was the worse. I remember one year she got me socks, gloves, and hat and said it was for both my christmas and birthday gift. I know some people may say "well maybe she doesn't have much money" Well that is not the case and that is something you don't do to a 7 year old kid. It makes his birthday suck when all you get is a cake and some candles and you are reminded that you got your birthday gifts at christmas. I think I need therapy now to work out this traumatic event in my life. I thought I had it repressed.

Clothing in general is a horrible Christmas present. I remember that it marked the end of Christmas Joy and childhood, when I started getting socks, hankies and clothes for Christmas. Bleah! :butt: If you can't do better than that, give me cash!

As for mixing birthdays and holidays, that bites too! Now that the boys are old enough, we take them out to buy one big ticket item for themselves for Christmas and another for their birthdays, whenever they fall. January is particularly tough, for we have a lot of birthdays then, including my wife, mother and mother-in-law!
I didn't surrender, but they took my horse and made him surrender. They have him pulling a wagon up in Kansas I bet.

One month before moving to Florida seven years ago, my Aunt gave me a pair of winter ski gloves!!
I guess her habit of either gloves, or socks every year got the best of her, and the even/odd years just fell wrong for me that year.

One year, I had loads and was determined to give them away .. what did I have left after Christmas?

Anything even vaguely resembling "soap on a rope."

Little kids seem to get excited about buying this sort of thing for their dads -- a very grand gift in their little minds.

Dads have to smile and express effusive thanks -- this is the easy part becuase one cannot help being touched by the excitement in the bright little faces watching dad open the gift.

Dads also have to use the gift -- this is the hard part. But by March, the gift can safely disappear.

If I were a paranoid sort, I would suspect wives of tormenting their husbands by starting to whisper in early December, "Dad loves soap on a rope," into the ears of their little tots as they drift off to sleep clutching their teddy bears.

Hey house! Do ya want my gloves? Seven years old but NEVER been used.
I still have them and use them as a talking piece for a laugh, and a not so suble reminder of how cold cold can be. Somehow, I can't even give them away!

The ultimate slap in the face is when someone gives you a family photo in a picture frame and says"Merry christmas."What a steaming pile of Micheal Moore!!!
