    Congrats to Brian May!

Yahoo UK News: Queen star hands in stellar thesis, 30 years late

"Queen guitarist Brian May handed in his doctoral thesis on Friday, more than 30 years after first starting the academic dissertation on a highly specialized area of astronomy."

Good luck on the dissertation defence Brian!

I've noticed links to ex-Sulfuric Acid guitarist Hizaki:

    I prefer Julian Bream myself...

So last week my songwriting partner decided to work with a couple of kids who were "rythymically challenged", so invited me up to our studio to play electric.

So, for the first time in over 15 years, I trotted out my Telecaster and old Peavey Classic tube amp. When those tubes "bloom", you get a really nice fat sound for rythym that is sweet and clean.

I am a rythym guitarist. My experince in 42 years of playing is that too many young guitar players are all flash and effects, and no basics.

    To me, that is sad.
If only you knew what's inside of me now,
You wouldn't want to know me, somehow.

Yeah, I agree. There's simply no substitute for a decent grounding in music. Pyrotechnics is OK in its place, but it'll fall down without good basic technique.

Did you ever see this little bloke on drums:

    Cool Al DiMeola

Okay, bear in mind that I am as musically untalented as they come. But, I know what I like. Whenever anyone says "guitarist" I immediately think, "Al DiMeola". I have listened to his playing, in awe, for close to 3 decades now. Just had to throw in my two bits.

I didn't surrender, but they took my horse and made him surrender. They have him pulling a wagon up in Kansas I bet.

Russell Malone. If you haven't heard him, make a point to do so. He is the guitarist for Diana Krall, and has also recorded with Harry Carsick Jr. on a few of his albums. The guy is an absolute monster, and a very nice fellow. I ran into him one day in Rudy's on 48th St. We played a couple of tunes together

Go find your copy of the first Santana album and put it on. Carlos was such a tasty rhythm player! Too bad he doesn't use that set of chops much anymore.

Keb' Mo' (Kevin Moore) does the blues about as good as it gets. I think he is still touring with Robert Cray.
