Pc Restarts

Hi all,

im so depressed because my computer keeps restarting, and i dont know why.
the amount of money i spent to get it to the specs i like

I think its a driver issue but in Device Manager theres no issues at all.

if theres any other info that anyone needs please ask.

AMD Athlon 4600 X2
2 X 74Gig Raptor HDD SATA(10,000 RPM)
1 GIG Corsair XMS memory (2.2.2.5)
256meg Geforce 6800GS (550mhz / 1.7GHz)
ECS KN1 Extreme SLI (Motherboard)

Memory 1 stick or 2? try reinstalling the Ram

problem was before the ram, but did do a memtest on both ram's (2 x 512meg)
Motherboard can handle 4 slots upto 4GIG.. thanks for the reply tho.

Try it with 1 stick.

I would use goldmem to test it 1 stick at a time.
I have seen memtest pass it and then goldmem fail
I know its a long shot and the issue was there before this ram
but i would still try it.

Also what power supply are you using?

did you check if there is a bios update for your board?ecs is not top grade mobo manufacturer for the type of machine you built for yourself,sometime new boards have really buggy bios when they first come out,the bios update is sure something i would look into

Tested Memory and no faults at all...
Clauded..... Your so right on the ECS motherboard, I wish i spent that money on a better motherboard, but anyway.... I did update the BIOS probably about 2-3 weeks into buying it. Has been stable for awhile so im guessing that cant be the prob ?
my PSU is branded THERMALTAKE 500W so i wouldnt think i need more power from that ?

It might help if we knew when the problem first occured. New software install, or whatever. Have you run Western Digital's drive diagnostic? If your drives pass the diagnostic, my first guess would be that something has trashed your XP installation. Could be several different flavors of malware. What antispyware/antivirus tools do you use?

If you are reasonably sure that the system is pest free, my next WAG would be a defective mainboard or power supply. Still the more information you can post, the better the chance that someone can get a handle on the problem. Hang on and be patient.

Just because Device Manager says everything is OK, doesn't mean that a driver hasn't become corrupt.

If you can pinpoint when this first happened or when it happens (what you were doing) it might shed some light on which driver is the problem.

I have had lots more success in troubleshooting problems when MS gives me a crash analysis. I was able to convince Dell to stop blowing off my server problems because of a crash analysis that clearly pointed to a hardware issue.

If I had no other clues, I would start by reinstalling my drivers, common ones first.

The thing about this problem is that everything can be ok for about 3 days and then all of a sudden i can have about 3 restarts in a day. Starting with the Blue screen of death and then it restarts like a second later. Then when windows boots back up it says that Windows recovered from a serious error so i then send the error report and they said on the website that its a driver issue but dont state what driver or if they know what it is. Now the things i've changed when it all began is....
Bought a new case which is a Thermaltake case and power supple(500W).
Also it came with a Soundblaster 5.1 Live surround sound card.
Come to think of it i did disable the onboard sound and install the 5.1 card, which does go in the same frame of time i started getting the restarts. but when i installed the sound card i think it took about a week before the first BSOD (blue screen of death).
any ideas on what to try ?

oh and also i did look in Event Viewer and have noticed alot of errors referring to a DCOM ?

its the Soundblaster 24bit 5.1 Live sound card(goes into a PCI slot)... comes with a remote control and a drive to place in a bay (same size as cd/dvd drives).
its pretty cool actually and would be gutted if that was or is the prob ?

is there such a thing as the sound card not being compatible for my motherboard ? being its not a great one, my motherboard that is ?

Soundblaster live cards are good cards, but they have trerrible drivers. They are implicated in a variety of incompatibilities. Still creative makes great sound cards I got an audigy 2 pro that's now obselete.
