Important Certs/Certs that Pay?
I thought I would post 2004 info here for general consideration/discussion:

No indication of what CRN's claims here are based upon.

I will be very interested to read responses to this. I've been convinced to serve on an advisory board for the local college in spite of the fact that I've been out of the IT field for a couple of years. The first thing they are asking is what certifications matter to employers and potential trainees.

Generally such claims are based on recruiting stats, so who's hiring who to do what .. but they always end up getting compiled by folks who just crunch numbers & wouldn't for instance realise that most places wouldn't touch a 'Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician' (number 11 on the 'Most Important Certifications' list according to them) without ComTIA's 'A+' as well (well not if they know what they are doing they wouldn't), which doesn't even get a mention on either list ..
Companies use certification as a basis for recruiting because they don't necessarily understand what most IT jobs entail, & that's some knowledge combined with experience & problem solving abilities which imho are far, far more important than memorising some software vendors 'mannual on how things should be done' ..
I don't think much to those tables anyway, no mention whatsoever of any ITL certs or Prince2 certs (these are 'method based' & much better than training on vendor specific certs), probably the best paying certs you can get in IT at the moment without really being that expert at all ..
