8x4x32x What do these numbers mean ?!
I have an HP CD-Writer 9100 series, 8x/4x/32X I don't understand what
these numbers mean, although I've been burning CD's for many years!
Recently I bought some ''CD-RW 16-24x for ultra-spped CD-RW drives
only'', which didn't work .. obviously they were'nt compatible with my
drive speed. So I thoought it's high time I try to understand what all
these numbers mean!!
I also bought some ''CD-R80 up to 52x speed'' and these are working
fine!! If someone can spare some time, I'd very much appreciate some help.
The following CD-RW speeds are available in the on-line shop where I
do my buying:
1-4x
24x
32x
4x-12x
10x
16-24x
Which one would be compatible with my drive ?

8x : CDR Speed
4x : CDRW Speed
32x : CDROM Speed
New 10x and above CDRW disks, wont work properly with older 4x CDRW drives.

Hopefully the question is now nicely answered .. but Techz what actually makes you think this ? I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't work, unless they are as stated for 'ultraspeed' (& then the implication comes 'only') which is a proprietry system of recording like mentioned for example here
..these discs are compatible only with CD-RW drives featuring the Ultra Speed logo..

My bad , I shouldve made that point clear. Yes its to do with UltraSeed, the CDRW media have the UltraSeed logo will only work with CDRW drives that have the UltraSpeed Logo as well.

Wow .. thanks for the quick response guys So, let me see if I understood this correctly, TechZ:
This means that the only CDRW media that would work on my drive (from the list I wrote) would be the 1-4x .. is that correct ? Would the 4x-12x also work ?

he-he-he everybodies confus-ed now !
Any disk, rated at any speed at all, without that logo Techz just handily posted (or the phrase 'ultraspeed') should work, just slower .. (at the maximum rate of your burner, rather than 24x or whatever..)

Great,Confus-ed!! Now I really do get it! That logo was the culprit all along! I needn't worry about all those numbers after all!! Couldn't be better.May I add ,normally forum experts very easily (and understandably) get fed up when newbie's, such as moi, ask very simple basic questions. I am grateful for not getting kicked in the teath, for mine .. thanks guys.

Naaaah, Newbies are fresh meat
You are most welcome, even though its twenty odd years since I might be called a computer newbie, I can still remember my frustration at not being able to find simple answers to simple stuff ..
& as various folks might still call me simple, its probably most appropriate !
