Windows XP USB HDD boot problem on SN85G4 mboard

Just wondered if anyone has experienced a problem like this >>

Trying to boot with the following configuration and failing:-

    - Shuttle SN85G4 motherboard with AMD64 3.2 proc (1.5Gb memory)
    - Internal Maxtor SATA HDD 250gb
    - External Lacie USB HDD 250gb
    (One partition per drive)
    - Windows XP on both drives (I cloned the Maxtor drive)

Boot.ini file on Maxtor lists the two drives.

My BIOS is setup with the following boot devices >>

First Boot Device = HDD-0 (the Maxtor)
    Second Boot Device = CDROM
    Third Boot Device = disabled

I try booting up off the Maxtor drive. Select the USB HDD option from the list of the two drives. The machine boots off the USB drive (I can see the drive been accessed) and then as it displays the initial Windows XP screen (DOS screen with blue scrolling bar underneath) the machine resets. I've also tried doing a SAFE MODE boot off the USB HDD - again it loads all the files - clears the screen - displays the Windows XP DOS screen with scrolling bar and then resets the machine...

I cannot therefore bootup off the USB HDD.

Is it possible to do this? I've repaired the XP install on the USB HDD so it's not a faulty install - or at least I don't think it is - I've tried re-running the XP repair on the USB HDD and it says the install is fine e.g. It won't attempt to repair it again as it reckons I've already tried that.

    Has anyone any ideas please?

    Thanks in advance.

    paul.

    bugger...

Just read this particular paragraph from this link

    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device.../usb-boot.mspx

    >>

Current versions of Windows should not be installed to USB hard disk drives because Windows does not support USB hard disk drives as the primary boot device. This paper introduces the expected industry participation related to the following:
Looks like I'm stuffed. Does anyone agree?
