Lost Safe mode in Windows ME
A while back, I installed a "fix" to Windows ME called "WINMEDOS.com" which allowed me to boot up in DOS mode. Unfortunately, it removes my access to safe mode, which I now need. The install of this patch alters IO.sys, COMMAND.com, and REGENV32.exe and I do not have the unaltered versions of those files. Is there any way to get safe mode back without doing a reinstall of the operating system?

Hi & welcome to windrivers forums
So no windows ME system disk then ?
I think you can easily restore io.sys & command.com to the original versions without the disk though, by running 'sys c:' from a prompt - but I suppose to be absolutely sure about getting the right versions, you want an original boot floppy for ME & start from that, to do this, & you can get one of those from say www.bootdisk.com.
But REGENV32.exe, will be trickier, it may though be lurking on your system somewhere if you know where its supposed to be, as windows often has 'spares' .. http://answers.tveasy.co.uk/m.p.w.ge...egEnv32exe.htm (you've probably got several versions).
This'd be much easier though with a system disk ! Which by rights you ought to have ..
