Hello Mags,
This new computer with c+d Is this a HP and do you have backup operating system on D? Or D has great music selection When you buy computer
with windoze already on it they tend to lean towards tidbits of trash you
do not need. Things to purchase to upgrade ETC. Maybe somewhere in d
you are accessing is a music font?
I wonder if you have a music related program that uses the D drive as the default drive for playing music cd's. For example, say you have a cd-rom drive that is the D drive and you have a DVD-rom drive that is the E drive. You pop in a music cd that you bought from Box-Mart into the DVD-rom and the music program you use pops up and says that it can't find the music files in the D drive even though you put the music cd into the E drive which can, of course, physically play music cd's. I used to notice this kind of thing back around 2001 when I first bought a computer. Most modern music and movie players have been written to be a little more intelligent (but I still see this kind of thing with PowerDVD when I play a movie on my desktop). I'm guessing that the offending music player has sort of "hijacked" your D drive thinking that its a cd-rom even though its actually a partition just because it expects to see the D drive be a cd-rom. I hope that made sense. If this is indeed the case, uninstall all your music players one at a time and run a registry cleaner until you find the offending music player. You should know you have found it when Windows correctly sees the D drive as a partition.
If you open My Computer and then right-click on your D: drive and select Properties, do you see AutoPlay as an option? if you do, click on it and be sure that all content types are set to prompt you for an action whenever the drive is accessed.
It looks normal ... with rather a lot of free space ..
The person who built the computer was over this afternoon, lovely woman, and she couldn't work it out either.
I guess it will disappear in about a year, when I do a Reinstall of Windows and all that lark, but be good to know where in the Registry, it's being told to look like that.
Well, you have a music recorder save file on there (audacity) and your my music folder on there as well..try moving both of those off and see if it changes. I couldnt tell, but if you have stray individual mp3 or wma files in the root of the drive that will happen as well. What are the folders with the x before them?

Right, I moved all the Music folders, mp3 and wma files to my C partition, did a Search to make sure I'd got them all. I then restarted the PC and ... see attachment...
(The X....folders are just documents I don't use often)
Hmm..I guess my only suggestion would be to remove everything from that partition, reformat it with disk management, and move everything you want there back.
Thanks Geoscomp, but I did that .. and mentioned that in the first posting I made here ... so my guess is, I/we're stuck .. and there must be a little entry somewhere in the Registry, but dunno what?
Thank you, CCT, I read that link with interest, but I had already re-set the columns that show to the right of the Folder Names - to show what I wanted. But the main title to the left of the Folder Names, still says Music... I think we're stuck?
It's bound to be in the Registry somewhere?
Might have to wait a year until I do a complete Reinstall.
Ha !! Woke up this morning and thought, 'it's no good, there were other odd things happening too, so I've Reinstalled Windows today and shall be glad to get off to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep........................ ..... !
Hello All,
I have just been scouring google to solve a similar problem, that is my C: drive began to belive that it was a video folder (most annoying)
after a lengthy and exhausting search of the registry and several hours reading up on how the system handles customization and folder behaviour i have found a soplution which is perhaps a little more elegant than reinstalling the operating system
yup, i do think i am cool
the solution is as follows:
1 back up registry and set restore point just in case the sky falls in then..
if the drive in question is C: then:
go to start
run...
type regedit
locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags\1\Shell
look for a key called "Folder Type" (mine was set to videos, Mags's would have been set to Pictures)
delete the key called "Folder Type"
c drive should now be reset to default
----------
soultion 2 is a little more drastic as it will reset ALL customzation for all folders and drives
(which is preferable to having a drive go psycho imho) windows will rebuild this customization table as you customise folders later btw.
solution 2:
back up registry and set restore point.
start> run..> regedit
locate and delete
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags
locate and delete
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\BagMRU
