HD enclosure won't be recognised by WinXP Pro

Just bought the VPA-3528T HDD enclosure to use it with an IDE 120Gb Seagate unity. The HDD was formatted a while back, does contain data, and works fine when outside the VPA-3528T enclosure, either directly connected to the computer as an internal drive or installed in a second HDD enclosure I have from another maker.
When installed in the VPA-3528T enclosure, the HDD is not recognized by the OS – a Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the updates up to today.
When I turn the power on the VPA-3528T unity starts out as a USB Mass Storage Device entry under Universal Serial Bus Controller. But soon - 10-20 seconds later – the USB Mass Storage Device entry disappears and the following message is shown in the General section of the Properties pop-up of the UBS Mass Storage Device:

Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

And the drive won’t show in the My Computer contents as a drive letter. The drive also will not appear in the Device Manager services section.
    Any help?

Does another drive work in that same enclosure?
Does that enclosure work on a different computer?
Does swapping out a different USB cable (and the IDE cable in the enclosure itself if possible) help?

It it's a "no" to all 3 questions, then its time to replace it.

I had a similar problem with an external usb enclosure, make sure the hard drive is set to master. Set as slave causes problems.

Yes, I know - I read that in the first post.

    That said, my questions remain.
