Norton AV 2003 uninstall
Has anybody else run into this... I had a customer buy a copy of Norton AV 2006. When they tried to install it, it told them they have an old version on their machine that must be first un-installed. They did that, but when you try to install NAV2006, it still tells you that a previous version is installed.
I think they did the un-install right from what they told me (did through add/remove programs). Are there any other tricks to a clean un-install?

Yes, Symantec now offers a few different Norton Removal Tool (NRT) programs.
It is on the Symantec site of course and free to download, just make sure it includes the NAV2003 product. I have had good success using it with NAV2004 and Norton System Works 2002.
I think they have been available for more than a year now and thank god they finally did something. Prior to this you were forced to manually plow through numerous folders and edit the registry searching for turd files, big fun.

There are MANY people having problems getting Norton off their comps - don't get me wrong - I use it.
But it is insidious. Itv actually protects iteself which you should expect BUT people don't.
To delete old copies, go to ctrl-alt-delete and then look at the auto starts and anything Norton has stop it auto starting.
Reboot and THEN try a delete.
Happy days.

symnrt.exe should remove it the symentec way. Then you can delete the registry entries manually. be careful when deleting the symentec folder as it changes the original windows installer. Visit the windows update website after the uninstallation or download the msifix from symentecs website.
good luck

The best tool I've found is Symantec's ActiveX-based web tool at: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...&src=symsug_us
I think it performs better than symnrt, symclean, etc.

Even after that, leftover remnants can come back to haunt you, especially on 98/ME machines. Youll need symnrt, symcln, and a lot of luck.
If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.
