    Long distance PC webcam idea..

    Hey everyone,

I've almost completed a plan for remote security monitoring, via several webcams/PC/DUN/monitoring software for a farm about 300 miles away.

I've found the monitoring software, have a basic [that is useless for any real work] PC in which I've installed a six slot USB card. I've got interior and local exterior camera slots and placement figured out. [Because dial up is the only thing available, I'm saving video files to an external, securely locked HDD, for retrieval via phone when possible, or on site when necessary.]

Here's the problem [and keep in mind I have never done anything like this before].

I'd like to place one or two camera feeds about 200 feet away, in an exterior structure. Both for "barn" monitoring, and there's some very interesting wildlife around that I'd like to catch on video if I could.

Any ideas on how to cover that distance with a USB device/cable...or something that might work instead?

I know this is an odd question, but thanks in advance...

go wireless.. as corny as it sounds the x10 cameras do that.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I agree with Noo, I've used the X10 wireless cameras before and they're actually decent enough for most applications. For what you're looking for they should work just great. The only problem I've had with them is that they seem more sensitive to EM interference than most other wireless devices. That was a few years ago I ran into that problem, they may have corrected it by now.
