[SOLVED] Bizarre keyboard issue with A7V8X-X [SOLVED]
BIOS UPDATE 1010 2004/04/02update FIXES THE ISSUE
I overlooked it...leaving my post for future board members.
P.S. SPECIAL THANKS to merlinsghost for also noting the bios update!!! special thanks, windrivers community pulls through again!
Hey Folks,
I haven't posted here within the equivalent of a couple of "decades" (measured in computer years i should note)
Anyway I used to be around when windrivers was all about fixing Commodore 64's. (just kidding)
Here is a unique problem which i've experienced time and time again, always in conjunction with an ASUS A7V8X-X motherboard. Once the machine boots into Windows XP (SP1 or SP2>>> no difference) the mouse will work fine and user can click around and use the computer. ONCE A KEY is hit on the keyboard, the mouse will IMMEDIATELY lock and keyboard will not output anything on screen (so keyboard and mouse lock simultaneously.)
The computer itself IS STILL ACTIVE and runs normally as pushing the power button on the front of the tower will initiate the standard shutdown sequence.
What makes this issue bizarre is that immediately one would think it was the keyboard or some sort of short w/ the PS/2 port, but the computer will behave like this with different keyboard/mouse combinations used. Furthermore the PS/2 ports are O.K. as the keyboard will work fine BEFORE Windows XP has loaded itself (ie. in the BIOS, in any dos program that is used.)
After doing various searches on forums (including this one) I've seen the problem listed but never a solution. What makes the problem more bizarre is the fact that once you plug in a keyboard that the motherboard likes, the system tends to 'fix' itself and you can plug the keyboard that DIDN'T previously work and all of a sudden everything is working great.
IT IS BIZARRE. (please note I've done the obvious stuff as well ie. check for conflicts/unload drivers in safe mode, etc.)
Anyone have any ideas?
Just to sum up the problem, I've taken another posters version of what occurs and have pasted it for your convenience:
"
I am having same problem. Now when i boot my computer, (running XP Pro SP2) the keyboard works in the BIOS and when i choose which O/S i wish to boot. When xp loads i have to log in, now the mouse works fine i go to my loggin and click it so i can entre the password, how ever as soon as i press a key on the keyboard, it freezes, and takes the mouse with it. The mouse stops working. Now because of the fact i need a password to log on, i cant even get into windows with just the mouse, so i am unable to access the device manager. Ive searched the BIOS but cant find anything to do with keyboard.
Im stuck, someone please help me,
thank you in advance
mld
"
Thanks WINDRIVER COMMUNITY!

Does this happen with a USB-based keyboard and mouse?

Actually, I have found the problem.
It is a known bug that a BIOS update fixed.
If you are running pre-BIOS 1010, then you need to update the BIOS.
A note from their "description" for the patch:
"Solve PS/2 keyboard sometimes become abnormal after entering Windows."
Go to support on their website:
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us
And in the upper-left corner, enter in the motherboard's model number: A7V8X-X
And click on "search info".
Scroll down through the BIOS releases and find the one you need.
