Need help with ASUS M2400N Internet Connection badly :(

    Hi there,

I have a problem with my ASUS M2400N Laptop.

    1. Cannot connect to the Internet
I have no idea how this happens. I have Googling for like 3-5 days, but still no result.
The M2400N ASUS laptop has the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 LAN 3B PCI Adapter.
Version of driver is 1.2.1.1 or 1.2.4.7 something.

    The situation is
It can detect the Wireless network in this house, but it cant connect to the wireless.
The 'View Available Network' window sometimes says that is it Connected, but sometimes it's Not Connected with the yellow star next to it.

When I repair the connection it is stuck at the 'Connecting to the wireless network'.
Something like "Windows could not finish: Connecting to the wireless network' error thing.

Whenever I check the Services.msc, the Spectrum24 Event Monitor Service could not be started.
Thus, the RoamMgr is also not started.

In addition, when I check the Administrative Tools>Event Viewer, I notice that Spectrum24 Event Monitor (s24evmon.exe) cannot start because 's24trans' is missing or so. And it's really missing in the regedit, compared to this ASUS laptop that I'm using to post this message.

I'm really tired of reinstalling, uninstalling Intel Proset both driver and hardware and also ATK Utility, as well as googling for days and such.

There is no Recovery CD for that problematic laptop.
I have tried applying my M6000N series recovery CD to it (as both laptop has same Internet PCI Adapter), but it is still giving the same 'Not Connected' error thing as explained above.

    I need help in this.

Please help.. I beg of you.
Formatting is not an option here as the laptop is not mine and it's used for business matter.

    2. ASUS laptop usually comes with keyboard with Fn button.
    So that:
    Fn + F2 = Wireless On/Off
    Fn + F1 = Hibernate
Fn + F5 = Brightness On (along with brightness display bar)
Fn + F6 = Brightness Off (along with brightness display bar)
Fn + F10 = Volume On (along with volume display bar)
Fn + F11 = Volume Off (along with volume display bar)

The problem is now the display bar doesnt appear anymore.
Although display bar is gone, but brightness is still working, but now with the volume.
Thus the laptop is now volumeless.

I suspect that this problem is somehow related to the first problem.
Compared to the first problem, I consider this as minor problem.
Need help with the first Internet connection problem.

    Kind regard,
    R

    Welcome to Windrivers Ryon

Are you using Windows to connect to the wireless network or are you using the Proset utility? If you are using windows, you don't need s24evmon.exe or the proset files.

What Windows are you using and which service pack?

If you have a COA on the bottom of the laptop, then any OEM windows disk will serve as a system disk. This is quite legal since your proof of ownership is on the label, not the disk.

page 30 of the user manual here it describes the hot (fn) keys, but makes no mention of the "display bar". These hot keys are normally controlled with a utility available from Asus here

The rest of your drivers are here

Last thing to check is whether the wireless switch is actually on. Most laptops have a hardware switch, but looking through your manual, there doesn't appear to be one, thus the lack of fn key functionality may be directly responsible for your lack of wireless connectivity.

    Start by reinstalling the utilities.

Ok, I have reinstalled all of the utilities, but it's still no use
Perhaps something related to Services.msc or msconfig?

By the way, could you please tell me in short how could the Fn function relate to wireless connection? :O I am kind of shocked that it is related.

Laptops particularly are able to turn off the radio with a hardware switch on the side of the laptop somewhere. Your laptop doesn't seem to have that ability... the wireless on/off is part of the function keys. Despite turning off the wireless, Windows can still see wireless signals coming in. So if the fn key is set to off, you can still see the wireless signal and attempt to connect. You can't connect because the laptop has been told that there is to be no outgoing signal.

The windows wireless service must be started based on what you have said so far and you are not using the proset utility to connect.

    Dear NooNoo,

I have got another problem when installing the Hotkey Setup.exe.
Something is wrong with my InstallShield.
When I dblclick Setup.exe, nothing happens.

When I check the Task Manager, there are 3 files that appears:
    Setup.exe, Wowexec.exe, ntvdm.exe

The Setup.exe and wowexec can only be closed if I end process of ntvdm.exe

I have tried fixing the InstallShield by reinstalling based on the installshield.com faq regarding this error, by deleting the engine folder under C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\InstallShield\engine and reinstalling the InstallShield. But this FAQ from installshield.com is not working.

Something is definitely wrong with my computer. More and more errors keep coming
    Please help.

I think this is the final approach to fix the whole system.

    Kind regard,
    Ronny

Since you have only recently formatted... I am going to suggest that you start again.

This time, start with an XP SP2 disk. Get ALL the drivers working under SP2, then download SP3 (keep IE6, do not install IE7 before installing SP3).

Start with the chipset drivers, then video, then sound, then hotkeys and other utilities and then finally add the lan and wireless drivers. If they are all then working, then install SP3 followed by IE7 and then update windows media player if you want to.

    Hi NooNoo,

    I havent reformatted the computer.
In addition, I have tried the Windows Script or Windows Installer Clear Setup thing to clear the installation problems. But still no result.

    I guess so.

    Let me guess.. for backup?

The thing is this computer has 3 partitions with Windows is mainly stored in C:
While the rest are in D and E.

Hmph... I dont want to format since this is my friend's computer.
Though I realize that the fastest way is just to reformat the whole thing.
    Oh my

Is there really no other solution?

Not without a good deal more information and guesswork and probably a few dozen forrays into the registry.

OK, first off, how did you solve the wireless problem?

Second, did you manage to install the hotkey utility OK?

Third are you using XP or Vista on this?

Wireless problem is related to TCP/IP.
So I reset IP and do something with the connection to the router.
    Something about filtering.

Now, for the hotkey thing. I have installed every Hotkey utility files and the drivers.

    Mine is Windows XP
    Asus M2400N M2N.
