Mouse problem
Hi,
Just a slight mouse situation here.
I have a PIII PC running XP, everything was going okidoki, then one day after turning on the PC the mouse (OS2) began to become erratic, then stopped.
I swapped the mouse for a serial D9 mouse, it worked OK then the same began again until it also stopped. (I have cleaned the Ball and roller shafts on both mice).
Upon reboot, I can see the mouse pointer in the center of the screen, but it cannot be moved.
I removed the 40G HD replaced it with another known HD with a known good OP system, which has good mouse control, same thing occurred. Mouse wont move.
Replaced the HD with the original 40G HD.
I have checked the BIOS settings, they are all OK.
I have borrowed a USB mouse, Yipee, the mouse now works.
Would I becorrect with this diagnosis?
The OS2 and Serial port mouse input sockets either has had a virus attack or is the motherboard on its way out?
How long will I have a working USB mouse before it goes also, but I have to return this mouse as I have borrowed it, so how do I get my original OS2 or serial mouse to run again?

Strange as it might sound that kind of erratic, apparent mouse, behaviour is often down to your graphics card or chip, you can try updating the driver but if it makes no difference it may have run it's course.
Have you tried changing the mouse resolution in it's control panel applet, sometimes the buffer can overflow causing problems, try reducing it first.
By way of a quick explain, the mouse movement is plotted by and drawn in the correct place by the graphics system, if the chip is breaking down it may not be able to keep up hence the cursor is not redrawn in it's new position as fast as it should be.

I'm curious - will your PS/2 or serial mouse work in safe mode?
