    Installing Windows Freeze Up

I placed the disc into the optical drive, it loads up and give me the ENTER=Install (or Continue) R=Repair F3=Quit/Exit and at that screen, my keyboard is frozen, so I cannot install Windows. SO FRUSTRATING! HELP

Hmm, that's pretty general, here's a few things to try:

    • Try unhooking all hardware except for the mouse and keyboard.
    • Try another keyboard.
    • Try a different Windows CD.
    • Try a different CD-ROM drive.

Why are you installing, were you having problems, or is this a new build?

Im using a PS2 keyboard, and it worked before, but I dont know why it just doesn't this time. Im installing it because I have a new harddrive I want to use and it doesn't work after it finishes loading windows.

Well, you have narrowed it down to the keyboard malfunction or the bios.

I don't know if you have a 3.5 floppy diskette drive if so you could try a boot disk set for windows xp.

XP has a glitch now and again detecting and working with USB keyboards and mice. Shut down the computer, plug in a PS2 keyboard, and let Windows restart, install whatever drivers you need, etc, to finish setup and after all drivers are loaded, mandatory reboots done, connect the USB keyboard and it should be detected and installed. Then you can shut down and unplug the PS2 keyboard.

Are you sure you have a good Windows install disk?

3fingersalute has already mentioned the basics before you can install in the first response to this post.

Well, X the next thing to check would be memory problems. That's about the leading cause of failed XP install or hung installs. GoldMemory: http://www.goldmemory.cz/ or MemTest86: http://www.memtest86.com/ are both good stand-alone test utilities. Don't just assume that if the memory worked last week, month, whatever, that it's OK. Got a machine on the bench right now with some kind of off-brand trash memory that worked about 2 weeks. One module is so bad, the computer won't boot with it installed, and the second is detected as a 32 MB module by the BIOS even though it's 128MB! If the memory tests good, there's Plan C.

Also, on occasion the jumper on the hard drive will let you get that far, even set wrong. Check that it is set to master or single drive, whichever is the case for your motherboard.
