On Board Sound problem help!

Hi guys! I have a weird problem here.

Everytime I try to connect the stereo cable (converted to mic cable) so that I could connect it to the mixer then to the amps to the big speakers, the audio driver disappears. And no sounds at all. Whenever I try to reinstall it using the cd, I'm getting the Failed message. The motherboard is Intel 945GTL. Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Can you get sound anytime or has this "converted cable config" killed the sound totally...you may have fried it with a "wrong config"

Ryanfelipe - What exactly are you trying to do??? I cant quite make out what your trying to accomplish by your post... Do you want the Audio from the computer going to the mixer or from the mixer to the computer or what?

And if its improperly setup good chance you hosed your sound card... Plus if your doing any form of recording audio manipulation the onboard sound chip isnt the greatest for quality...

Re-evaluate the situation.. get yourself a Soundblaster Card ( choose apropriate model for what your doing ) and try it again hooking it up properly..

I don't have any more sounds at all now even if I just connect a headset. The weird thing about it is that the older pc can be connected using that converted cable and works like a charm. Would there be a chance I fried the output for audio and mic in the motherboard?

Sorry to confuse you. I was trying to play media files coming from the computer to the mixer then to the big speakers. Thing is, I use a converted cable (the stereo cable to connect to the pc and then converted in the middle of it to round cable use in usual Microphone's cable to connect to mixer). Do you think getting a separate sound card should fix this?

Pull all the audio cables out.

Reboot the system

Check the Device Manager to see if you have any errors.

Already pulled out the audio cables out. Even tried reinstalling the sound card driver from the CD but getting "Failed" message. OS is WinXP Pro.

Does your mixer have phantom power switched on? 48 volts can do weird stuff to something that isn't expecting it.

i'm not sure what do you mean by phantom power, but I suspect it has really some volts when i connect it to the pc and that's what causing it.

I guess I should connect first my pc to an amplifier then to the mixer. What do you think?

Phantom power is a way of providing voltage to a condenser mic, usually 48V sent over the third pin in an XLR/Canon plug (big fat thing, larger than 1/4 inch guitar jacks). Even some entry level mixers are fitted for phantom power on the XLR mic inputs and there will be a switch somewhere on the mixer, maybe per channel to turn it on/off. What's the mixer make and model?
Which mixer inputs are you using? The 1/4 inch mic/line or RCA phono or the 3 pin XLR?

thanks jeff, though a bit techie for me... but i guess i'm getting your point. the mixer has some volts indeed.. i'm afraid there is no way to turn it off since the model of the mixer (Peavey) is pretty old. I'll just try to jack it to the Line In if we could find a long cable.

If the mixer has phantom power, it WILL have a switch somewhere, Ive never seen one without. Which Peavey model is it?
