    Unhappy Win XP startup issue

I have a computer that has been brought to me here and the problem is when you enter the user name and password it then appears to startup, but no icons appear then the next thing it shows is "saving settings" and it then returns to the log in screen. I have gone over the whole machine , using Bartpe and can find no real probs.

Any other suggestions....(pulling my hair out here )

    Thanks in advance

is this with the administrator account? - if yes, do you have any user accounts other than the administrator account you can try ?

have you tried it in safe mode?

I worked on a Machine like this not too long ago and it was severly infected with Malware. I could not do anything to resolve it. What I did was pull the drive and connected it to another computer and ran like 5 different virus/spyware scans on it. Even after that the problem was still there so I just backed up data and restored the computer.

If you can do a Virus/Spyware scan and clean it up you may be able to do a repair install of XP. That is something I did not try because I already connected the drive to another PC to get the data off.

If it will not load to desktop in safe mode removing the drive may be the only option if the customer needs data.
At the source of every error which is blamed on the computer, you will find at least two human errors, including the error of blaming it on the computer.

I've had problems with that before. I've found creating a brand new user in safe mode (if you can get there) has about 50% chance of it allowing you to log in with normal mode. But as Bob said, yer probably looking at a spyware infection and it may be easier to wipe and start over.
