How Do I Update Kernel using SRC file?

I ran the following command to update my kernel. Upon reboot of computer, the version is still the same as 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.
    It should be kernel 2.6.17-1.2157_FC5

This is the command I used in attempts to update kernel.

    rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.17-1.2157_FC5.stk16.i586.rpm

Did I do this wrong? Or is there something else I need to do as it is a "source" file.

Please let me know. As always, I am learning Linux and with your help, I can better understand.

    Thanks :-)

oops sorry looking at the file I see FC5 so ya fedora.

Are you just wanting to update the kernel without compile? If so then dont get the kernel src rpm. Just get the binary rpm then install it. You may have to update grub or lilo depending on what boot loader you are running.

if LILO then you will need to edit the lilo.conf in /etc and make sure the new kernel is there, remember to add new lines and keep the old kernel in there incase the new kernel fails to boot.

if GRUB then you need to check the grub conf file located in /boot/grub/ and the file there should be "menu" or "menu1" or somthing I cant remember the exact name but its menu somthing. ahha sorry I have not used fedora in a year. Ubuntu is so much nicer.
