Downloader Virus

I have the downloader virus and Norton will not delete it, it says the file is in use by windows. I have tried every trojan horse eliminator and antispyware programs, I have also tried turning off system restore and deleting it that way but nothing is working! It is annoying because when I get on the internet, all these popups come up wanting to download winfixer without my permission. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this virus? Thanks!

You likely need to go to safemode to do that.
What that means is its running and memory and cannot be touched.

I have attached what symantec says the virus is, it is called the downloader virus and it is the type of trojan horse.

Yes, the file (one at least) you want to delete is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\boot400.dll.

Run Hijack This, click scan without log, click config, click drlete on next boot, then use the Hijack browser to locate C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\boot400.dll and then click it and agree to get rid of it - then when you are out of Hijack this reboot.

I don't know if you can help me but that would be awesome if you could. I did try deleting the windows\system32\boot400.dll file and it didn't make a difference. Maybe the file I need to remove is different. I know very little about this stuff.

As you can see, you have a number of issues - I admit this is beyond my capabilities - in such instances I ALWAYS encourage a CLEAN INSTALL.


You can play with various and sundry av and cleaner utilities but nothing cleans up like a reformat (including a 0+1 overwrite) and a reinstall.


Sorry - maybe someone else here wants to tackle this.

probaly a tad late, but KillBox is a great tool to kill off unwanted "locked" files. Malware is now getting into the registry to protect file, locking them by marking them as "pending rename", this effectivly locks the file from everything.
