hi everyone. i have a compaq presario 2500 laptop that has a power-on password. i was about to do some maintanence on it and remove the power-on password for me so i wouldn't have to type it in every time i had to reboot. I went into the bios and where it asks for the new password hit the enter key, as there was nowhere to simply remove the password. now it will not take the old password and the enter key doesn't work either. i have not been able to get around this. any ideas? i'm getting desperate at this point.
Usually the poweron password is stored within a chip along with the hard drive password. You could try removing the CMOS battery but I wouldn't hold out much hope. You can get the password removed by a professional usually for about $35ish. A google search will bring that up.
The Power On password is set in the System BIOS options. It prevents unwanted users from accessing the computer. By default, HP does not set the Power On password. If you set the Power On password in the System BIOS options you will be prompted for it immediately after you power on the Notebook PC.
If this password is forgotten, a repair at an HP certified repair center is required to reset the computer. Please contact HP to schedule a repair. This service is not covered by the warranty.

Did you remove both the laptop battery and the power cable before removing the coin battery?
Did you wait at least 5 minutes?
Did you plug in ONLY the power and NOT put back the laptop battery?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
