"Error loading operating system"!!!!

Hi,

I have an hp pavilion 751 system # D7214H and I wanted to do afresh winxp install using a boot winxp sp2 boot cd, and in the process the machine turned off and now every time I try rebooting I get:

"Error loading operating system"

I have tried to get into setup mode to change BIOS settings by fressing F1 (as it says right after I start the machine "press F1 to enter Setup). I have tried that a zillion times, and tried every other key including delete key, and nothing happens it still shows the error msg above.

Sounds like if it rebooted mid-inistallation and will not resume the install that you need to start over with the installation of XP.

Thanks for the prompt response bro...It wouldn't even let me get there...5 seconds after a hard reboot I get the the error msg!

Hmm depending on your keyboard the f1 might not work if it requires you to hold the fn (function) key down while pressing the f1 key. Also if you just hold in the f1 and you're too early for the bios to respond it'll ignore you thinking it's a stuck key. Try just tapping the f1 key if you haven't done that so far. Also before you started all of this did you open up the computer at any point? The reason I ask is if you had maybe a wire or ide cable was jarred loose.

I believe, generally, that you should make a Win98 boot disk and reformat the HD then turn it off and try the install.

thanks guys...no i did not open the pc...maybe a i should. I've also tried keeping my finger on F1 and also just tapping on it while rebooting...NOTHING!

It just crossed my mind but you can press f10 to select the boot device at about the same time you get the option to press f1. You could see if this will allow you to bypass your boot issue until the setup is complete.

F10 didn't work either!! I've tried all keys to no avail!!!

There are several models of that comp made for different markets:

Do you know which you have or where it was originally bought?

Since the default Bios keys aren't working when you try to access Bios, I would suggest trying a CMOS reset, ie, pull the Cmos battery for 5 minutes.

edit; NOTE: always turn OFF the computer, pull the power plug and press the ON switch and hold it for a few seconds before ever opening the side panel. Keep yourself discharged (static) by touching the case screws and try NOT to touch anything inside you don't have to.

Thanks CCT! unfortunately I don't know where exactly it was bought, but I guess it was in the US. A friend of mine gave it to me before going back to India. The system # is D7214H and I will post the serial # once I get home tonight, maybe you can tell which model it is.

I will also try to open it up and do a CMOS reset tonight and I will post the outcome.

CLARIFICATION REQUEST: You're not asking that I clear the CMOS content as described in the following link. Are you?:

Also when you say CMOS battery reset, do yo mean the battery shown on fig.1 (in the above link) between the USB and the SIS chip?

You will be doing the same thing pulling and replacing the battery BUT won't be sticking a metal object into the guts of your computer.

Thanks for your swift response! I think step2 talks about "de-soldering" (or maybe it's the opposite) It talks about shorting the solder points, so I wanted to make sure, cose I don't have any soldering tools and I don't want to screw things up...

See step 2 below:
2.Use a flat screwdriver to short the two CLRRTC solder points.

'Shorting' is the bridging of contacts, one of which is ground and the other being charged. De-soldering isn't mentioned that I can see.
