TrekStor GmbH, a German NAS manufacturer, has entered the U.S. market with a NAS drive that can apparently set itself up as a RAID array over a network. The DataStation maxi z.ul Network Storage Drive is being sold at U.S. online retailers including Amazon.com, J&R Music and Computer World, RCS Experience and The StorStore, with prices beginning at $201.15 for an 80-GB model to $419.00 for the top-end 400-GB hard drive. For whatever reason, Amazon is already offering the 400-Gbyte model for $274.99.

Like other network storage drives designed for the home, the maxi z.ul can be used in both a USB 2.0 as well as a NAS configuration. Drives can be daisy-chained, providing up to 4 terabytes of total storage, according to the manufacturer.

According to the press release announcing the product, the drive adds a unique capability: the ability to form a RAID 0 shared volume or a RAID 1 mirror, using two drives connected either via USB or over a network. However, representatives from TrekStor were unavailable for comment or confirmation, and even a U.S. distributor representative was unavailable for several days.
