Cannot download Win update
Hi All
I have spent days searching the Net to an answer to this problem, and have tried some of the suggestions without any effect. So WinDrivers is my last hope.
My PC is only 3 weeks old. I have checked for viruses and have checked firewall etc. I have tried suggestions from Microsoft website. All fail. My OS is WinXP Home SP2
Whenever I try to access the windows update web page IE locks up and I am left with a white screen or eventually IE tells me the site is not available. This happens with Office updates as well a Windows updates. To get out of the lock-up I have to invoke Task Manger.
I an told this is due to a doggy Security update from Microsoft that I have downloaded at some time and many Forums suggest that it be remove. In XP Home this is not possible.
Microsofts advice is wait till the next SP update!!!!
Any advice or a solution. Please.
Regards

So why cant you remove an update from XP? it is possbile if you just go to control panel and show updates, just make sure you remove the right one. Check your internet security setting with IE to see if somthing was accidently turned on. If you have norton or any other Anti-virus try turning off the firewall when you try to update. I dont think its SP2, Im asuming updates worked before hand hence how you got this update that may be causing your problem. But I am 100% sure that security updates can be removed from XP home infact my computer right now has Home and i can remove them if i wish.. ALso try another internet browser if you havent already.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the feedback; CCT - no the link locks as usual.
Potato Salad - Yes the automatic updates work, but when I try to maually check for updates. Just locks up.
Yes have turned off Virus and Firewall - no difference.
Have tried another Browser - But Microsoft will only allow download from Explorer.
Will have a look at security setting to see if I can remove the offending Security update.
Thanks again

Uh, no, Robert. Go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, put a checkmark in the Show Updates box. After the list refreshes, scroll to the bottom of the list and remove the suspect update. Alternatively, the System Restore utility may do the trick for you. You should also be aware that there are some reports floating around on various tech sites that claim widespread problems connecting to Windows Update exist. I haven't been able to confirm these stories from personal experience, but you might want to wait a few days and see what happens. I have also found that some of the older drivers for CMedia soundchips cause Windows Update to hang intermittently. Updated drivers are available directly from CMedia at: http://www.cmedia.com.tw/?q=en/driver

Slgrieb - Yes can remove the security patch. A little frightenibg though, as lists all my current programmes as possible being effected by the removal. Not too sure if I should remove it now. Don't wan to generat more problems. What do you think?
OMGmissinglink - Do that no effect.

All
Read the instructions, followed the Microsoft wisdom ( all except registering DLL's) and setup th eTrusted sites.
Guess what - The update page still locks up!!!!
One thing MS did not say was remove the Security update, which appears to be causing the problem!!!
I am so fedup with s--t Microsoft products.
Regards and thanks everyone for your help.
