Guys i need help bad!
My sytem is a P4 3.0 gig PC800 socket 478 prescott in an Abit IS7-E Motherboard
My problems started a couple of weeks ago with media player my pc would hang one day i checked Winbonds Hardware Doctor and it was telling me my CPU temprature was 70 degrees celcius so i unplugged the PC cleaned the fans and heatsink still the same problem. Then i updated the bios temprature dropped to about 50 degrees in idle however i got new warnings about the +3.3 voltage which i understand relates to the chipset If any of you guys know whether its hardware or software related and if it is harware is it the cpu or the motherboard and do i need to replace either any bit of advise would be great thanking you in advance

Go here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 and download and install Everest Home Edition (free).
Once installed, run it and select Computer then sensor and report the voltages (you can create a report and save it as txt and Everest will save it to a sub-folder of the Everest (Lavalys) package).
Looks like this:
Temperatures:
Motherboard 42 °C (108 °F)
CPU 49 °C (120 °F)
GPU 46 °C (115 °F)
GPU Ambient 43 °C (109 °F)
Cooling Fans:
CPU 2192 RPM
Voltage Values:
CPU Core 1.56 V
+3.3 V 3.42 V
+5 V 5.73 V
+12 V 12.22 V
+5 V Standby 5.16 V

That may indicate a problem with the power supply unit (PSU).
As a check comparison with the Hardware Doctor, have you observed the same readings in the BIOS setup?
A bit (ha ha) of reading also suggests folk have complained of irregular temp sensor readings from that board.

kieree... did you check the temps shown in bios?
Heatsinks do not usually stop working... unless you took the heatsink off the processor and didn't replace the thermal pad or paste....
The abit board should set the cpu automatically in bios... unless you have been setting it manually?
What is the case type and casefan configuration?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

When you run Everest, check what BIOS version you have. They made a cpu temp calibration change in version 20 and some other changes from 20 to 23.
http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/...ies=1&model=80
It is ALWAYS wothwhile to check that your cpu heatsink is firmly attached - they can be jostled loose (at least, mine has been).

Everything except the bios revision.... can you have a look for it please?
You also need to tell us the case type (midi, desktop etc) and the case fan configuration.
You didn't answer my question about the heatsink... have you taken it off? If so, did you replace the thermal pad/paste?
Have you tried resetting bios to defaults?

i have never messed with the heatsink its been untouched since it was installed over 2 years ago as regards my case its a tower im not sure of the manufacturer but it could be jeantech but im not even sure if they make cases im going to find out about the bios revision i will find that in bios setup? or is it the numbers in POST? as regards the voltage bios says its 3.12 about the same as hardware doctor but in doctor i get warnings even if the pc is idle

During the post it gives you the bios revision number or code...
You mentioned case fans, are they also as supplied or did you fit them? I don't need the case model, just the type so I could figure out what the air flow was like.
Voltage wanderings could be a bad PSU, similarly it could be the cpu failing or even just the cpu voltage sensor failing...
did you try resetting the bios to default?

I think this is the number youre looking for
03/30/2005-I865PE-W83627-6A79AA1BC-24
if it aint i apologise im totally ignorant its a fairly big tower the 2 fans i got with it are on the side and at the rear i also added another one to it of the same type once again thank you i cant really afford to purchase a new cpu or board and i believe theres plenty of life left in it

That would ID the motherboard... the bios revision is usually shown on the top left section when you see the 03/30/2005-I865PE-W83627-6A79AA1BC-24
OK, about the fans... air should blow one way, so the ones at the side and the front should suck air in and the ones at the back should blow out... Just check that the fans are arranged so that this can happen properly.. check here for explanations and diagrams

Since the date on your BIOS is 3/30/05 you have the revision 24 BIOS (latest).
The voltages you reported are ALL lower than optimum. With the stuff you are running, I would suggest a 450w psu is needed.
Do you have a multi-meter available to manually check the 12v output from one of the power leads?

a friend of mine had a look at it and is convinced its WinDoctor so he rearranged the settings and i fixed up the fans oh and as CCT said the bios revision is 2.4 im going to monitor hardware doctor for the next few days im also going to get a new case and stick back in my 450 watt and im going to try and get a multi meter
