Unhappy XP wont recognise USB Hard Drive in disk managment

Im trying to connect a new SG SATA hard drive through USB to my computer running XPSP2. When I connect the drive, it wont show in disk management. It shows in the device manager as a storage device. When i select the storage device properties and populate the drive, it comes up with an error and cant read the drive.

I then connected the drive directly to the motherboard and then i had no problems. I formated the drive and it was working just fine.

I was under the impression everything was under control and it was just a matter of plug and play through the usb connection again. But alas the thing happened as described earlier when trying to connect through USB.

The USB ports are working fine. I have tried it on my notebook with the same results. Please help.

    Welcome to Windrivers KillerKangaroo

Is the drive set as master when connected via usb?
I assume this is a usb enclosure for sata drives? What make/model of enclosure and hard drive please?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
