    This is killing me...

Ok... I have a freind's computer. There is something on it. IT is... POSSESSED....

basically, and randomly, the computer automatically shows the start menu, chooses "RUN" types in "CMD" and then goes to the command prompt and starts to type some FTP commands...

sometimes it types what appears to be HTML code... it does this constantly. I restored his computer from a backup he created... but it does the same hting. So i told him the backup was infected with whatever his computer has and he had it at the time he made the backup... he says no.... that he was using the backup image on the machine for 5 months and it just recently started.... I GIVE UP!

HiJack This log in next post...

Thanks for all of your help.
Don't ask me... I just work here.

How much of this log have you checked for yourself?
The behaviour you describe is that of someone remotely controlling the machine.
What trojan, antivirus and spyware programs have you run?

Frankly if you expect us to go through two posts worth of hjt, without you having done the basics, you are expecting too much.

Edit: The machine is set as a vnc server - last entry on hjt log. Who installed it?

    Thank you for your reply.

I have gone through the log meticulously. I have tried disabling items that I thought weren't needed but with no help.

As far as the VNC server, my freind installed and uses that to remote control his machine from work and when he is away from home at various other locations.

The reason why I think it is more of a script than a remote control is because there is no control of the mouse... and it is as if the character commands are "flooded" into the machine. If I close out the command interpreter and open notepad, the characters still come in... as if it didn't know that it wasn't at a prompt.

Trying to "think like a criminal" if I was remote controling someone's machine trying to be devious... I would stop if I could see them "using it" and that it wasn't idle...

    Forgot to mention spyware software...

I have run AdAware SE Pro (latest definitions) and also used Spybot but they find nothing.

he uses Symantec Antivirus Corporate edition for his A/V.

    Thanks again.

try a-square free you have to sign up for it, but it best for trojans, dialers and that sort of thing.

What firewall does this machine have?
Oh and just a thought, is it a wireless keyboard? There have been cases where the receiver receives from a completely different computer....

Oh and change the password on vnc and make sure it's a strong one.

    Firewall and others...

I think you are right about the problem not being a script...

The computer is on a network that is attatched to a linksys firewall. The port for VNC is open on the firewall to allow passthrough. I turned the port off and it hasn't happened yet.

I will change the password... the current one was 8 digits and I believe all numbers.. I will try capital leTeRs in the middle with numbers...

    Keyboard is a wired one.

Part of WS FTP Pro. Monitors Internet Explorer for FTP connections. If IE is attempting to connection with FTP, it asks the user or launches WS FTP Pro for FTP use

I wonder if something is going nuts here

Have you checked the startup folder or the registry?

Scooter, you should check out http://www.sysinternals.com/

You really should download every tool offered. Autoruns lets you view every program, process, and service loading at startup. You have a far greater level of control than msconfig or the services plug-in provide. Filemon lets you view all file activity on a computer, Regmon lets you see all registry activity in real time.

This company was recently purchased by Microsoft, so you might say these tools are MS approved. Mark Russinovich is now a Microsoft Technical Fellow. Yeah, my wife laughed too, but in Microsoft's corporate structure Mark is officially an Apostle.
