Cannot Log On to the system

This problem has me stumped and I was not sure where to post it.

The system: Dell Dimension 8100 with XP Home operating system. Stand alone.

The problem: Cannot get past the logon screen. Owner keeps getting this message:

The system cannot log you on now because the domain "Computer name" is not available. I am able to access the system in safe mode but when I go to see the network settings ot tells me that networking is not installed.

I installed XP Home about a year ago and it was a clean install with all the defaults. Is there any way to recover from this problem w/o having to reload the system? Could this have been caused by a virus?

Thanks a lot to both of you Crastabule and CCT had already changed the computer name but couldnt get to DNS because there was no networking services installe. Have re-installed network services and am waiting for reboot to try out the DNS solution. I'll keep you posted on results

CCT your fix mentions windoze 2000. Can I run it safely on MSHOME?

Was the only MS one I could find that dealt with that specific error - however, this one might be better:

This one looks even better - figures MS couldn't use the same heading for XP as 2000 or at least relate the two.

Thanks for your help! The machine apparently thinks is an XP PRO system. I have no clue as to what caused this problem and this was a favor for a friend. As usual you end up spending more time on the freebies. I told her she is going to have a very busy week end reloading software.

Cleared the hard drive and reinstalled windoze.
Case closed!!
