    Hi,

    I used to use the Western Digital Lifeguard to pre-format the drive..writing all zeroes to the drive. I don't remember if it will scan drive surface for bad sectors. If not, do you know of any good utility that will do that other than Norton Ultilities or System Works?

    Most of the long tests on the manufacturer's utilities will scan for bad sectors. If you want something a little more in depth MHDD is highly recommended and free.

    A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.

    You might start HERE. Also Chkdsk is a tool built into windows for checking the disk for problems on the plate and marking them so they cannot be used.
