I am VERY sick of McAfee
I downloaded a free antivirus from AVG today and am testing it on my daughter's computer. Why? Because I'm sick of McAfee.

I have been using McAfee Anti-Virus since v. 2.0. Each year I got more and more dissatisfied with the product, but I kept using it because I could get it for virtually free after rebate. In recent years, actually getting the rebate became a challenge. Thankfully, I keep photocopies of everything, but it was still a pain to resubmit everything each year because they claimed they only received half of what I really sent.
This year, they went too far. I started to fill out the rebate form just now. One of the requirements was that I send in the proof of purchase located on one of the inside flaps on the top of the box. I opened the box, but both tabs were blank. In previous years there has always been a proof of purchase on one of the tabs. I guess McAfee came up with a new way to ensure they don't pay out many rebates.

AVG is great. I also use Anti Vir...but your right, McAfee is not the av app it once was. All the XP machines I have at work have major problems with updates even though I've used the workaround.

I have probs with it in the corprate world, but they give us a free home version (work pays for) I've luckily had NO issues with it whatsoever.
Failure is not an option -- its a "feature" of Windows.

That's the best thing about AVG. Its not "virtually free", its 100% actually free.

I've decided the McAfee Firewall is almost the anti-christ....talk about not being able to polish a turd!

Yep, the best thing about AVG is it is free. Next best thing is low resource utilization. Unfortunately, that's just about where the good stuff stops. I can still run a top-notch AV program like NOD32 on a machine running AVG, and often remove some malware that AVG failed to catch.
I will admit that AVG has improved over the last couple of years, but then, the detection capability of just about everyone's AV software has improved. AVG doesn't update often enough, its track record over the last few years isn't good, and it just doesn't catch the range of pests that the better for-pay software or even Avast! free AV does.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really not anti-AVG. AVG users pay my utility bills, auto insurance, and buy the odd six pack of Newcastle for me just about every month.

AVG could well be all a cautious web user needs, but I've used Avast! Free to clean missed stuff off systems running AVG, so I now use Avast myself

Another satisfied Avast! user here.
I switched from McAfee and then AVG.
The last time I used the McAfee all-in-one product it hosed my TCP/IP stack.
Twice.
I wasn't convinced it was the problem you see, and reinstalled Windows and then McAfee...
Avast! has different modules you can also disable at will and is good for Outlook, Outlook Express and Exchange.
