Advice sought Please
My brother has advised me that there is some data on the old hard drive from his old desk top that he had. He phoned me to ask if there is any way that we can retrieve the information that is required.
The only way that I can think off doing such a way is to turn it into a slave drive, but before we attempt to do that it would be great to get some advice on the matter.
First off I do not know on what sort of HDD it is or what make of drive it is, also the O/S that the was on said PC was Windows ME. The current PC is running Windows XP Home edition. As I do not want to get a conflicting of OS now do we.
Please could you advise me on what precaution that I should take as I believe that the ME O/S is in the old hard drive? I shall have to wipe the ME O/S from that hard drive or will I have to re format the drive?
I shall have to by the cables that will be required to complete the job.
Will there be any drivers that will be required if so please could you advise me.
I thank you all for the advice that shall be imparted to and shall keep you advised on how things go.
Regards.
Before attempting some thing ask questions.

Unless ME has some crazyness in it that I am unaware of, you should be able to change the jumper on your old hard drive to slave, and hook it up with your other drive set as primary. You should then be able to get to your files. Somebody please shoot me down, and quick, if I am wrong. I have spent a good deal of time avoiding ME as an OS, so I may be in the wrong here.
--oh, and don't refomat it, or you're going to have a whole lot more trouble getting those files.
-Come on, I'll lend you money for a coffee.

You could probably get away with not changing jumpers at all by simply connecting it to the secondary IDE cable (the one your CD-ROM is most likely connected to) with nothing else connected to that cable.

or invest in a usb caddy and turn it into an external drive.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I have done that and have used the company before with no problem and it was a result and the hard drive worked first time.

or you could try a usb thumb drive and copy the data that way...you would not have to go in the old computer just boot it up and copy to the thumb drive. How big the thumb drive you will need is determined by how much data. a lot of places have thumb drives cheap
