The usb cable that you use to connect the printer... did it come with the printer or did you buy it separately? If it was a separate purchase... was it the cheapest one you could find?
OK, this is odd... that board should have Via 686 onboard audio (VIA 1616/1617 codec). Why does it show the Ensoniq 1371? Did you turn off onboard audio and put a pci card in for sound?
There are 3 revisions for that board... rev 1.x, rev 5 and rev 5.1. Can you have a look at the motherboard and see if you can see the revision number? A bios update may help the situation.
Before that though, I think a repair install of XP with the printer plugged in, switched on and online and a good quality usb cable used could solve this.

Hi NooNoo,
The USB cable was purchased seperate to the printer, but i have no idea if it's a good one or not. Whilst messing with this problem i have already tried two other USB cables i had, same outcome unfortunately.
I don't know about the audio on the board as today is the very first time i have opened the computer to look inside. (filthy!)
the board is GA-7ZX Rev 1.01.
I tried to do a repair install by booting from the CD, but after agreeing to the license agreement the only options i was given was Install or Delete? In the box it had the following;
C: Partition1 (FAT32) 19085 MB (8253 FREE)
Unpartitioned Space 8 MB
I'm really not sure what i'm doing so i aborted because i'm a chicken when doing something irreversable to my machine.
Am i missing something when i try to do the repair?

You should have chosen install, then you would have been given a further choice to repair the current installation - which is the one you want .... or to put a new copy of windows there.
When you looked inside the computer, did the speaker jack get plugged into a card sitting in a white pci slot? Or does the speaker jack into a socket which is directly connected to the motherboard? Or does it connect to a plate which sits over the pci slots but has no card that fits into a white pci slot?
When you reboot, can you see what revision bios you have? It's two characters starting F...

HI, I chose 'Install' then it went to a new page asking me if i wanted to format and install a 'fat' system or keep settings, so i kept settings. Then a warning appears that if i continue, the program will write over all previous files and i will lose any data stored in my documents and other files. I 'Aborted'
'speaker jack'? the only thing i could see was an audio wire plugged directly into the motherboard. The only things i could see plugged into the motherboard slots were the graphics card and a USB2 card. there are five white slots, four are empty.
when i reboot i don't get chance to see what revision bios i have as any writing disappears in an instant.

If you hit the scroll lock key (or maybe it is pause/break) during post the process will halt then you can read the screen - gotta be quick like a bunny.
Here is a guide for Repair Install;

So do you have speakers connected to your computer? Is this audio wire the wire to the speakers?
I think Gigabyte have the bios version as part of the bios menu title.... try pressing del a few times when you start up the computer to get you into bios.
And it is the pause/break key, not the scroll lock key CCT.

Hi, sorry it took so long to get back to you all about this problem. I ended up formatting my hard-drive and re-installing XP, it worked. Printer is now happily chugging away whenever i ask it.
Thanks to those wonderful people who helped me, CCT & NooNoo
