Hey there, I am having the exact same problem and from my looks on the net, it is the aspi. I have downloaded and installed the latest but they are still coming up as the wrong version. The proper versions for xp that i can see are 4.7 for all 4 drivers. I have been working on this for over a week. Maybe we can figure it out together. I am having the exact same symptoms you are. Is it possible to delete the aspi folder and then reinstall it???

Well I deleted the aspi then reinstalled them to no avail, I think my problem might be with the 1.1 usb ports so I ordered a pcmcia card with 2.0 to see if that works. I have been able to burn with dvd decrypter just takes a while......

Hey again. Here is what he sent me...

    Dear valued Sony Customer,

    Standard controller/disable DMA/disable CD Recording
Please ensure the system is in the correct configuration:

    1. Change the main controller you have to a Standard Dual Channel Controller

Open the Device Manager(open up the Start menu, right click on My Computer,
left click on Properties, click on the button labeled Device Manager under the Hardware tab
Click on the + next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers A Primary IDE channel, Secondary IDE channel,
and a PCI Controller (sometimes an Intel or SIS or VIA) will be listed
Double click on the controller, click on the Driver tab, then click on the Update Driver button
This will open up the Hardware Update Wizard, if it asks if Windows can search select No, and click Next
Choose "Install from a List or Specific Location," and click Next
Select "Don't Search, I will Choose a Driver to Install" and click Next
Under "Model" select the Standard Dual Channel controller and click Next
    Click "Finish"
At that point a window will appear with Standard Dual Channel printed at the
top. Close this, but do not restart your system if it prompts you to.

    2. Disable DMA:

7 Double click on the Secondary IDE Channel.
7 Click on the Advanced Settings tab.
7 Change the Transfer Mode for Device 0 from DMA to PIO.
    7 Click OK

    3. Disable CD Recording:

    Open up My Computer.
Right click on the Sony drive and left click on Properties.
Click on the Recording Tab, uncheck the box next to Enable CD Recording on
this drive. Click apply and okay.
If a Recording tab does not appear, go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs
and remove all of your Roxio or EZ CD Creator software. Log onto
www.roxio.com and download and run their registry cleaning tool.
http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061. Reboot and disable your Cd Recording.
From here you will want to reboot your system to let those changes take
place. The drive should be working at its peak after these changes.

Please visit our website at http://sony.storagesupport.com/ for all the
latest upgrades and up to date FAQ's.

This seems to have fixed some problems but now the error I get is drive wasn't ready and invalid format. I believe it is the dvd+r discs I am using as I have had several friends of mine tell me they have had tons of probs with them. Any idea what to do to correct it so the burner will recognize dvd+r?

If you believe it is the media that is the problem, then change the media make and model. Get some other make of dvd+r and test it.

Sony have lists of compatible media - but your drive is not listed. click here to contact sony or use their tech chat and find out what media you should be using.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I noticed that I couldn't find that make on their website. Any idea why that is? I was trying to get the latest firmware flash and I can't find anything for that model...

Hence why I suggested you contact sony and provided you with a link....
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

they were no help......I've tried everything. i've tried half a dozen different software so it's not that either. it has to be the hardware. if I could find the firmware for it i'd flash it but apparently the drive is non existent....

Here is what I just got from a Sony Erep..

    Welcome 13leafs ...

    Jerry has joined this session!
Jerry says, Hello, my name is Jerry. May I have your full name and
    phone number please?
    You say, Dana Drake 9024432351
Jerry says, That drive is OEM.
Jerry says, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) products are not
    supported by Sony
. Sony manufacturers and license hardware to compliment other
manufacturer's equipment and is solely bundled as their product.
We would like to be able to provide support for your product,
unfortunately, the product you have is not a Sony supported product.
A portion of Sony's business is producing special products for
manufacturers to install in their systems. We recommend contacting
the vendor directly for technical support or respective OEM that the
product was purchased from. The vendor is familiar with the
modifications on the product and best qualified to provided support.
Jerry says, That drive is designed by a different company and sony
builds it for them and when they buy the drive they sign a contract
that Sony has no ties to the drive. You need to contact the Vender
you bought the drive from for support.
    You say, ok thanks. :-(
Jerry says, Thank you for using the Sony Technical Support chat
service. In a few minutes, a transcript of your chat session will be
emailed to the address that you provided at the time of login.
    Have a nice day.
