No OS found. HDD cannot be detected.

Hi, this problem started recently. Sometimes when I startup I get this message "1962 No operating system found. Press F1 to repeat boot sequence."

This message appears almost every time at startup. Other times, when it does start up, the computer works fine for about 15-20 minutes until I get a blue screen telling me there was a problem and the computer needs to shut down. It recommends disabling the BIOS caching or shadowing.

So I entered the BIOS at setup but could not find where to disable caching/shadowing. I also checked and the IDE Hard Disk Drive is not being detected. I just bought this computer 2 months ago, any help would be greatly appreciated.

FYI: It's an IBM NetVista Model # 6579-TAU, Windows XP Home, 1 GHz 384 MB
yes it sucks but it's all I have

This may sound odd.....but we have alot of the 6274-16U model here that do that...SOMETIMES a bios update will pull it out of it...with this model tho, we have alot of drive failures, and this is the same message we generally see.

So I would get the most current BIOS if you don't already have it.

Also, if you are going to extract it to Floppy, put the file you d/l'd from their site on the ROOT of your C drive..if you don't the sucker won't extract...very strange, but thats the beauty that IS IBM!

Failure is not an option -- its a "feature" of Windows.

Mama never told me geekhood was gonna be like this....

    Welcome to Windrivers elihu

If this was a new purchase does it have a warranty?... before updating the bios, check with the vendor in case you need to make a warranty claim first.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."
