Welcome to Windrivers Lost.
Being lazy tonight on this one... long day.
You sound like your more than capable if you used Everest.
That being said, do a Google search for AC'97 Audio Controller drivers.

Now come on Shamus, this is an IBM laptop - lost moma needs to go to www.ibm.com
Click on support & downloads near the top of the page, then either have the page identify the model (if the laptop is used to open the page) or find out the full model and enter that in the search box. The audio driver will be listed
general page for the T23 is here but it is better to search via the actual model number.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

"I do not have a recovery cd"
Does this mean you have pirated software or what? If the person you bought the machine from installed the OS and didn't give you an OS disk, then you have problems a'coming.
