Toshiba Satellite hard drive cloning problem

    Hello all,
My customer bought a new Satellite P105 S6104. It came with Media Center Edition... he didn't know or notice! Had XP Pro on his old IBM. So I wiped the new drive, and cloned old one to the new one using Norton Ghost 9.0 in Windows. Won't boot and no error, just a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Ran a repair install of Windows, but after the 1st stage and reboot, it will not boot into the second stage of setup. Just a blinking cursor. This is really the second try at this. The first time there were two other partitions which I left on, the second time, I removed all partitions.
This blinking cursor is what is bugging me. Usually there is some message from the bios. IE: can't find ntloader, can't find the hard drive.
Is there some proprietary script that Toshiba requires to boot?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Ghosting from one set of hardware to another is going to cause this problem - especially if Norton was involved.

Why not have media centre? I don't understand why he must have pro?

I did nearly the same thing recently with an acer that went from a 80 gig hd to a 120 gig hd.
To save time i used Norton ghost on it and tried to ghost over the system while expanding the partitions.
It did that very thing exactly, Just sat there at a blinking cursor after it said the clone was successful.
I was short of time so i didn't get to resolve it. But I would like to know what happened.
I ended up just using the restore cds.

    Thanks Noo Noo.
I've done that many times before, and if the MB chipset is different, then I do a repair install of Windows. That takes care of all of the hard ware issues.
PCs with Media Center seem to take a performance hit and from some reports there may be a reliability issue as well. This particular unit would reportedly not "connect to the customer's network" no matter what he tried. He has networked 3 or 4 other computers to this network, but could not make this one connect.
Also, you kind of knocked on Ghost. Is there something wrong? I've used it for years and don't think I've had any issues.
    Thanks, Dean

This is the second one of these Toshibas. The first one would not play DVDs smoothly, and was warranteed. Ferrit, I did as you did and restored to factory after failed attempts to change OS too.
I may try to erase the first 100 cylinders and install Pro from scratch. I've also heard good things about Acronis.
Could this have anything to do with imaging an IDE drive to a SATA drive?

Not ghost! It's the only product of theirs I actually like! I meant the Internet Security or Antivirus. If you can get to recovery console, turn those off and you will find it will be able to boot.

Oops, Noo Noo, I misunderstood. Since Symantec (Norton) owns Ghost.

So, I'm gonna start a new thread, what's the best A/V?... unless I find one recently.

    Thanks, Dean

    Exclamation

See, I checked recent posts and found one.

I guess no one has an answer to why there is no error message, but just that stupid blinking cursor... even after the first stage of Windows repair install.

    Thanks all.

If you cloned the old IBM drive, it was probably tattooed for the machine it was originally installed on..a repair install will not fix that..the drive image will only run on the ibm it is intended for.

    Thumbs up

    Thanks, Geoscomp.
That's what I wanted to know. Is IBM the only one to do this? Or do other OEMs do the same thing? I don't suppose there is a work-around to remove the tatoo?
    Thanks, again.

no various companies have used various forms of this at different times. and no there isn't a work around that I know of...
