RAM Compatibility Question
Hello everyone.
I have a Gateway CX2724 with 2 RAM slots both used with a 2x512 MB DDR2 533Mhz (PC 4200). I want to upgrade to 2x1024MB, but I am kind of stuck. I went to newegg and found memory that I liked (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144183).
All great reviews. I thought I would see why people gave lessa favorable reviews and one of them suggested that I check compatibility with Kengston. So I went to their website and my machine was not in the list for compatible notebooks. What was compatible (http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...submit1=Search)
is not even sold by newegg and as you can see it is twice as expensive for what seems, to my untrained eye, basically the same product.
Two questions:
1. What am I missing?
2. If I buy the memory I liked, will it run on my notebook?
I could never figure out what kind of RAM I need... so emberrasing .
Thank you all for the help.
If con is the opposite of pro, what's the oppisite of progress?

According to Crucial your Gateway supports
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-4200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
so here is the Crucial Version
You said

Which is probably why you have a hard time with memory. Each motherboard supports a given specification of RAM, so choosing RAM is not what you do - you find RAM that matches the specification.
I personally like Crucial, because they have a no quibble warranty, never had a dead stick from them and if they say it's compatible and it doesn't work, then they sort out for you.
The memory at Newegg would probably work, but is slower than the Crucial offering and of course you would have the hassle of returning it non faulty if it didn't. Buying it direct from Kingston is possible and they do have your laptop listed
So now you have a choice, slightly slower memory from Kingston or the faster stuff from Crucial. The newegg price for the Kingston is fantastic...

Thank you.
NooNoo, as usual, has a great answer. It's funny. A guy from Gateway wanted to sell me 1GBx2 modules at PC4200 for $105 each.
I guess Crucial is the winner here.
Just one more thing... Any ideas what I should do with my old modules? I don't have another machine to put them in.
Thanks.

Ebay them or send them to a deserving person.
