MSI K8N Neo Platinum - Processor Support?

    Hi,

Does anyone know if any BIOS versions for the MSI K8N Neo Platinum (MS 7030 PCB Ver. 1) support Venice core processors?

    Specifically this processor:

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Codename: Venice Clock Speed: 2200 MHz
    FSB: 200 MHz Multiplier: 11x
    Package: uPGA Socket: 754
    Process Size: 90nm Voltage: 1.4 V
    Transistor count: 69M TDP: 51 W
    # of cores: 1 SMP # CPUs: 1
    Cache L1: 128 KB Cache L2: 512 KB
    Cache L3: 0 KB Die size: 144 mm˛
    Released: unknown Part #: ADA3200AI04BX
    Features: MMX, 3DNow!, SSE, SEE2, SSE3, AMD64

I am looking at a system in which the owner, wishing to clean dust out of the heatsink and fan, elected to pull the processor from the ZIF socket along with the heatsink rather than just blowing the dust out. This probably would have been OK, except that he did not separate the processor and the heatsink when he tried to reinstall it all -- squashed, bent and broken pins a plenty.

The only worthwhile replacement processor I can find is the ADA3200AI04BX and the system will not POST with this processor installed (However, I do not know whether it will POST with any processor, either). So I do not know whether I am up against BIOS issues or a damaged motherboard.

    Thoughts?

Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

Being in a hurry earlier, I did not fully explain.

I looked at the MSI site earlier earlier. The only Venice core mentioned is the 3000+, which is listed as "under testing."

But sometimes there are Beta BIOSes...... So I suppose my question should have been -- has anybody been able to get a Venice core processor to work in this board?

    Hi Ferrit.

I have tried resetting the BIOS with the jumper. No go.

Also tried pulling the CMOS battery, waiting, and then reinstalling it. Still no go.

    Hi CCT!

The poster seems to be using the Socket 939 version of the board: "I just bought a MSI NEO platiunum 2 board and a AMD64 3200+ 939 venice .

I don't think the Venice 3200+ will work in the socket 754 board, at least not without some future BIOS update, and given that MSI has not been forthcoming with such an update (even though the Venice core is now old) and that I don't have any spare Socket 754 processors to get the board to a level where I could do the flash, it seems likely that it is never going to work.

So I went and picked up a cheap ASRock board, a K8NF6G-VSTA. It has an nForce 405 Chipset, which is similar enough to the nForce3 one from the MSI board that I was able to plug the hard drive in, boot, and deal with driver issues -- easy. All similar enough that XP didn't even ask to be reactivated.

I have used a lot of ASRock boards in industrial client systems (mostly Intel chipset boards) -- so far they have proven to be cheap, stable, and reliable.

Yeah! Missed the 754 buried there.

This site however has a guy says he ran a Venice on 754 K8N Neo - http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=412080&page=3
