Another WIN98SE CD ROM not found thread.

Hi there,

I have just done a new reinstall of WIN98SE on an old HP. The CD ROM drive is showing in the BIOS and when I run DIR F: through a startup disk. Once Windows loads it loses all recognition of the CD ROM drive. It was working when I installed WIN98SE last week, but has now stopped. I was trying to install DX9 when the reading of the CD ROM drive stopped.

Is there any way that installing DirectX 9 has contributed to this problem, and how would I resolve it?

I have considered reformatting the PC and reinstalling WINME, or WIN98SE again.

Any recommendations as where to go to from here please?

I'm reformatting and reinstalling WIN98SE, without the DX9 stuff, to see if that helps.

DX9 is unlikely to have caused this problem... more likely you have a problem with the autoexec/config.sys files loading the realmode drivers... or the chipset drivers have a problem or your aspi layer is corrupt.

Let us know how the reinstall went.

The reinstall was fine, WIN98SE can now see the CD ROM drive, but I am having real problems with finding/installing the right chipset drivers.

I have downloaded about 5 versions of the SiS 5598 chipset drivers, even the originals from the SiS website. None are working and they all give me a blue screen of death on restart after installing. Then when I start in normal mode I get told the drivers may be incompatible with the hardware etc. So I am left with crusty 16 colours.

I have also been to the AMD site to see if they have some kind of drivers to enhance their processor, but can't find any for the AMD K6(R)-2-300Mhz.

I don't know the mobo name/manufacturer. Not even the HP specs have it. There is no visual indication of manufacturer on the mobo itself either.

All I am after now is some way to get 256 colours minimum out of this pitiful 4mb onboard VGA, without the blue screen of death.

I am about to post this in the Video/monitor forum. Should I continue to do so?

So is the video onboard?
The report above gives no identification for the motherboard. Is this a branded machine like hp, compaq, time?

Do you know the motherboard make/model? If not try this to identify it. It will give you the bios string, so even if it doesn't come up with the make and model, give me the bios details.

The chipset is 5597 and the chipset drivers may be different from onboard video... but until I get the motherboard identifiied, I can only guess.

Yes it is onboard video.

It is an HP Pavillion 6306.

AIDA32 says the chipset is SiS 5597, but on the actual chip it says SiS 5598.

That tool is almost the same as AIDA32, but it did find the mobo information: Asus Spax 1.01

You may have been downloading the chipset drivers which are not always needed in 98se

Alternatively you may not have installed the agp (gart) driver from the chipset drivers so the video drivers won't work quite right.

If you have, then we need full details of the blue screens you get when you install the graphics driver.

There is a BIOS Upgrade available...Release Date: 1999-07-29, Version: 1.10...more recent than your 07/08/98.

Do you have access to that Recovery CD? You might be able to obtain the correct video drivers from that...just a suggetion.

Hi Noo Noo, I have reinstalled WIN98SE and retried the correct drivers, they keep giving me a blue screen, so I uninstalled them.

I don't know what the AGP (GART) driver is. Also, the driver from SiS has driver folders for Win 95, 98, 2000, NT and it doesn't specify 98SE in any particular folder. I was installing from the 98 folder.

DonJ, I don't have the recovery CD. The PC is a recent cheap purchase for my partners niece. I am fixing it as a favour and using my old 98SE CD.

The PC was apparently able to play games at 256 colours before, so I am not sure how they did it. Also it was playing the games on the current BIOS, so I don't think flashing the BIOS will help what is going on.

I really need to get this PC working in a minimum of 256 colours.

Any other ideas?

Seriously, disabling the onboard graphics and installing a pci card that you can find the right drivers for would seem to me to be less of a hassle!

I have several old graphics cards lying around Shamus, problem is, is they do not have the same pin configuration.

UPDATE:

The BIOS upgrade was absolutely necessary to get the drivers working!!

Obviously the previous install was using the old chipset drivers for the old BIOS. The old chipset drivers are obviously not available any more.

Thank you very much DonJ. I updated the BIOS, installed the SiS5598 drivers and now it can run in up to 1024x768 res with true colour (24bit)
