    Laptop shut down problem

My mother-in-law asked me to look at her PC. It's an HP Laptop running Windows XP (the slash screen just says XP - so I don't know if it's home, pro, or media center). Her complaint is sometimes when you shut down, the desktop disappears and the "Windows is shutting down" screen appears - but then it locks there. She has to press and hold the on button to turn off the PC.

During my time with the PC, I shutdown 5 times with the power cord connected and everything worked fine, everytime. I shutdown 4 times on battery power and experienced the problem she described four times. She claims that it happens to her both way - but not all the time.

So far, I've done some basic computer cleanup (deleting temp files, defrag, etc), a Windows update, and ran a virus/spyware scan. I'm not a computer tech - but the family "expert" that get's asked to fix everybody's PC. If anybody has some suggestions, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance.

You can find out which type of XP by right clicking my computer and selecting properties - the system shows what service packs and which XP.

As for your problem sounds like it's getting confused with power management. What HP laptop model is it? Have you been to HP to look for updates?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

OK - thanks for the replies. Is there an HP "auto-update" feature like Windows update - or do you just have to look for things that may apply to your PC?

I did apply all the Windows update - and I know it has SP2 on it.

I will look into the power management stuff and let you know.

    Thanks again...

    Give this a try..

You can do a scan from there and it'll tell you what updates are available for your machine.
Failure is not an option -- its a "feature" of Windows.

Mama never told me geekhood was gonna be like this....
