The drivers that drive your hard drives also drive your optical drives. Burning software and video playback software are needed to use the drive fully.

I used my CD-RW/DVD drive to load my WINXP using WIN XP CD.
but once the WINXP is loaded, it took driver for Sony CRX320EE from XP.
and then it stopped reading CD/DVD.
Once I removed the driver , it again started sensing the CD and reading the same. but then it automatically loads the driver and it stops reading again.
so it has to do with driver. is there any correct driver for Sony CRX320EE ? I saw on google search many people having same issue with this OEM drive of Sony

This can happen when you load some burning software. You probably need to edit the registry following the instructions here
What is the error code in the device manager?
Is this on the same machine as the problem with the S3 unichrome video?

1. there is no error shown in device manager. it says device working correctly.
2. yes it is the same machine as S3 unichrome video.
Can this be due to Nero or power DVD ?

Lots of things can cause this issue, but you say that the drive is not showing a problem in device manager.
Boot to safe mode, will it read a cd then?

No success in safe mode? Now that is unusual since windows is not using the normal drivers.
Tell me more about how you removed the drivers and the cd could be sensed and then xp put the drivers back... how did you remove these drivers and how long was it before xp put them back?

only time when it worked was when i formatted the pc while solving issue of VGA driver. I used the CD to load XP.
Once I loaded XP then since other softwares were in harddisk partition I loaded from there.
after XP got loaded, CD-RW/DVD drive is not snesing CD. in device manager it shows working perfectly well.
I am sure if I once again format it may start working.
So should I do that?

Maybe a repair install rather than a full format... and install the via drivers straight away.
