Connection between PC and Server way too slow

I've been trying to figure this out for some time now. Basically we have two workstations that access a program on our server via a mapped network drive. One Pc loads the program in about a minute. The other take almost 5 minutes to load the program. I've checked the cabling, the switch ports, the NIC's, and even clean booted the pc in question. None of this seems to fix the problem. I thought we might have a really weird NIC problem until I tried downloading a file from another PC and it flew. The problem only seems to be when downloadig files from this server.

There are two graphs on there. One is from the PC without the problem. You'll see that it spikes up nicely and runs the program. The other is the pc with the problem. It stays at 4% or less usually and takes an eternity. The blip in the front is a 9Meg file that I used to establish a baseline before I ran the actual program.

The two workstations run windows xp pro. The one with the problem is actually much newer than the other and is in all other respects very fast.

The server is Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. I'm a bit ashamed to say we are still peer to peer. Only these two computers have access to that program.

Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome to Windrivers jwr_1986

When you load the program on the slow pc, is it in use on the other pc?
Have you checked the permissions on the program.. is the slow pc user actually named or is the user part of a group - is it different from the other pc?

    What about antivirus...?
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

No it is not in use on the other PC at the time. Both Pc's are individualy named in the permissions. They are the only PC's named in that policy.

    Thanks

Had that same probl with a PC that had a nic set for autospeed/autodetect.

Try set the speed to the actual speed of ur network (10 or 100 or whaterer)

    LEt us know..

When you had that problem did the NIC still show the connection as 100mbps. This one does. I'll give it a shot though when I get a chance.

    Thanks

    Connect was showing @ 100.
    The card setup was auto.

Forced it to 100 f.d. (our setup is full dup.)

Dont know exactly why (the nic, the switch (dayum Nortel) or else)
    but it did the job.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll give that a shot as soon as that computer is free for a bit.

    Thanks again.

Unfortunately that didn't quite do it either. There is no noticeable difference. I don't intend to mess with the NIC in the server but I don't think that would be it. The server connects to a switch at gigabit.

Sorry I took so long getting back to everyone.

    Thanks again

Check and make sure the DNS settings are correct.

Incorrect DNS, Gateway/Router, or WINS information can impede network performance. Make sure settings are correct both in Windows and in your Routers.
