    Question Rebooting Loop (Part Deux)

I have a similar problem on this rebooting loop bit. Except that the weird part is, after 2-4 reboots it will eventually boot to the desktop. It will briefly display the BSOD, immediately reboot, and eventually load to the desktop and run for an indefinite period. [Last boot-up ran for 48 hours.]

All WinUpdates are loaded and appear to be running smoothly. Utilizing Toshibas website: I have flashed the BIOS, updated the audio, video, WIFI, & Chipset drivers install error-free.

    Still same problem.

BSOD reads: Plug and Play detected an error most likely caused by a fault driver.

    System:

    Toshiba Satellite
    WinXP MediaCenter 2002 w/ SP2
    NO new hardware

This system came to me via a friend of a friend in trouble. I went through the normal BIOS screenings and error researching, but no avail I cannot seem to find a like this one out here. I am sure someone has it, but i can't find it.

This logfile is dated after all updates, restore attempts and flashing occured.

...and more and more and more...

I suspect the owner of this laptop loaded something he wasn't supposed to but he will not confess to it. He states "it just started happening a week or so ago."

I also attempted Windows Restore and went back 2 & 3 weeks. BSOD persists.

I am beginning to think bad RAM or bad PCI controller on the MB.

Mcafee was outdated so I installed NAV_CE 10.1 : NO Viri

    Thanks for all the replies.

I know NADA about your OS but, if you have a newer processor and it is hyperthreaded or dual core +HT, when you do get the system up, does it show as an ACPI multiprocessor system and do two cpu's show ?

Plug and Play driver is a hidden device in device manager which enumerates the stuff like usb devices etc. The driver version (with all updates) is 5.1.2600.2180. See if it shows any errors or what version you have. You might try updating the driver.

It also might me something that is plug and play and messing about... on a laptop it could be the cdrom, floppy, usb devices, pcmcia cards etc.

There should be a few more details with the BSOD (like the error number 0x000000000) and there will be events in the event viewer which will give more clues.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

The OS is still XP SP/2. The Media Center portion is just additional software geared towards the Windows media stuff...

Otherwise, yes there are 2 CPU's showing in the Device Manager. I will have to take another look tonight for more specifics. I am at work right now.

    Thanks,

    Vic

How do I find out what version a 'hidden' Device Manager APP is?

    1. No PCMCIA Cards installed
    2. No Floppy Drives
    3. All USB's are disconnected during boot-up
    4. No Other error messages or additional data in the BSOD description.

The event viewer did have some Red-X scripts. I'll post those tonight.

    Thanks,

    Vic

show hidden devices then open the properties page for the plug and play then click the driver details tab.

Vortex, I'd say that intermittent problems are more suggestive of hardware issues than software. Bad drivers, for instance, usually cause repetitive and consistent problems. So, you should certainly test the hardware. Memtest86 works well, and I would run the hard drive mfg's diagnostic.

Memtest86 requires a floppy drive. Request a resolution... can I use my mem-stick?

I am receiving new errors and lock-ups now. I think it is over my head now and requires a much more qualified technician for the job.

Thanks for all the tips though. I am rebooting in Directory Services Repair now. (cross-fingers)

    Hmm, very interesting.

After following your instructions to view hidden devices:

You say, "...plug and play" and this laptop says "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" listed in Alpha order. There is no "Plug-and-Play" device menu in the Device Manager. Weird?

After expanding the view-tree for "Non-Plug and Play Drivers", one item has an Exclamation on it. "Serial" When I click on its properties, it says the device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)

Device Type: Non-Plug and Play Drivers
    Manufacturer: None
    Location: None

Almost looks as if he loaded an entirely incorrect version of drivers on this laptop, but everything is working properly. It is booted up right now, ON-line, CD works fine, plays music fine, no System errors.

    Wow am I stumped!

Vortex, you don't need diskettes! Both memtest86 and memtest86 + are available as ISO image files you can burn to CD. This is clearly stated on both sites. For that matter, you can get MS Windows Memory Diagnostic as an ISO file.

You don't have plug and play software device enumerator under system devices with show hidden devices on?

As for the serial thing - remove it and then scan for hardware changes.

And yah, all the memory testing stuff are cd based now... you must have missed it.

The way I read it, if 'plug and play' was not enabled in bios all devices installed would have had to be through 'add new hardware', which is possible. Then they would show as non-plug and play.
