    Power Supply?

    Hi All,

Have a box in that would shut down 3 seconds after hitting the start button. I replaced the power supply from an Antec 350 Smart Power to an Antec 380 True Power, The computer started great. Unpluged the system and put it aside. Next day I plugged it all in to double check it, and the same problem with the quick shut down?? Any ideas? BIOS fan settings?

    Thanks in advance.
No matter where you go........there you are.

Certainly could be a problem with the CPU fan not getting up to speed or stalling due to worn bearings, dust buildup, etc. But, I'd pull the heatsink and check the thermal interface material for poor coverage. Lots of thermal interface materials may become less effective over time, particularly the cheaper ones that are likely to creep under higher temperatures. Of course, after you do this, you should replace the TIM before you remount the heatsink.

I would go straight to bios if possible and see if there is a status page where the temp can be seen. See if in fact that is the problem after cleaning the HSF

You might also have a problem with the power button sticking. I have seen computers that the power button would stick somewhat in the "down" position. When the button was pressed, the PC would turn on. It would then turn off again in a couple seconds because the button was being "held down" as far as the computer was concerned.

Without decent information it is hard to say.

What motherboard? What brand (if any) and model of computer?

With the side cover off, can you see the cpu fan start as soon as you push the 'Start' button?

Have you or the owner jostled any internal components installing something recently?

    stuff like that
