Dell Laptop Service Tag

Hey all,

Great forum. I have a quick question hopefully someone can answer.

I recently purchased a Dell D800 Latitude off of ebay. I am trying to reload the OS but having trouble with a few drivers. So I wanted to check the original configuration from Dell by entering the service tag on their website. It came up invalid. I contacted the seller and he said he changed it himself for his own identification. Also, he has no idea or paperwork with the original service tag. Is there a hidden way to retrieve the original service tag?

I guess I could probably use other means to figure out the hardware like Sisoft, but still would like to know if it is possible to restore the original service tag.

You might be able to find it in setup but him changing it sounds awful suspicious to me....

In setup I assume you mean the BIOS? In BIOS it has the new one and I have looked all through the other pages in BIOS as well.

As far as suspicious, I agree. But I don't care actually cause the laptop works great and I am very happy with it.

you might be able to use the Dell System Profiler located here:

(you have to agree to the eula before using it..but I agree with Shard..very suspicious

if you can get online with it, just go to that link and it will find your service tag number for you..suspicious may mean stolen though..and you should care

I know what suspicious means..... I just don't want to risk losing my money if it was indeed stolen. Besides, I have not rushed to judge and have no real reason to. I paid my money for a nice laptop and got one, end of story. He gave me an explanation and I am ok with it. He gave the service tag a common name after the warranty expired which is the main reason you need it I would think. I assume one has every right to do what they want with their equipment. Besides we are getting off topic......

The service tag can also point you to the exact variation within a model of computer which may have different driver needs than other variations in the same model..and, more importantly, exact bios updates

Did he peel the sticker off with the tag on it? I had a student do that once but it istill had the express service code in the BIOS and was able to use this website to convert the service code into a service tag.

Generally, not having a Service Tag isn't a big deal. More often than not, Dell support gives you the same list of downloads as you get from just the model number. If you need detailed information about your hardware, download and run Everest. You can cross check with Dell drivers and find the appropriate set easily.
