External Caddy Problems

Hey, I've just replaced a couple of 120gb IDE drives with a 250gb SATA drive, so I bought a USB caddy to use with one of the IDE drives. I've plugged it all in but when I first connected the USB the new hardware installation failed. Every time I plug this drive in it will be detected in Device Manager as a mass storage device but shortly after will just disconnect.
It never comes up in Disk Management or My Computer.
The box has an external power supply and the drive is jumpered to master, I've tried both drives which have both worked fine in my PC and have been formatted...so I'm at a complete loss.

For a bit more info, the caddy is made by geminisonic, just a cheapy, the drives are seagate barracudas, ive tried it on both my XP Pro machine and my parents Vista machine, with the same problems.

Anyone had similar problems or know any possible solutions? Or do I just have a dodgy caddy that needs replacing?

If the drives are good and the caddy behaves the same on two different machines, it is pretty likely that the caddy power supply is bad or the usb cable is bad or you haven't got one of the connections fully seated. The final test would be to beg or borrow another caddy, put your drive in it and see if it detects/installs on your machine.
