Toshiba Tecra 8200

Hello, I'm working a tecra 8200 that wont boot up. All see is that the battery indicator is yellow. I've pushed the rest button and it still wont boot. Can someone help me?

I've been through all that. It won't boot with or without the battery,memory or hd. It won't boot. I thought maybe the mb is bad. Is there a way I can be sure?

If you could suggest a preferred brand and model, that would be even more helpful. Do you generally use an ISA, or a PCI POST card with a laptop? MCA perhaps?

Unfortunately, trutech, there really isn't a simple way to test the Tecra's mainboard. You could test the AC power supply to see if it is in spec. If it puts out like 2 volts, it won't charge the battery and it won't run the system. Otherwise, I think you are safe in assuming the mainboard has tanked.

Well here's the thing. I took the battery,hd,memory and top cover off the board. When I plugged the power cord in the fan on the mb doesn't even crank up. I even did a test to see if the screen went bad by pluging the laptop up to a monitor and still no results.

Sorry if I failed to be clear, but the AC power adapter is rated at x volts. You can use a multimeter to verify that the output of the adapter is OK. One probe goes on the outside of the plug to the notebook, and the other goes to the inside surface. If the voltage doesn't match the specs, the AC adapter is bad. But, all in all, I'm sure the mainboard is bad.

how much would a replacement mb and cpu be? can someone recommend a link?

The cost of a new cpu\motherboard cannot be given for machines of this age...(it's a PIII 850mhz) You could possibly find one on ebay...

Frankly, a dirt cheap new laptop would outperform this tecra...

I'm with you guys. It probably would be cheaper to replace the laptop. I think the information on the hd is more important to the person. Is there a way I could extract files from their hd?

That's the easy bit!! You just need to remove the hard drive and get a usb to laptop cable (I have one that does laptop drives, ide drives and SATA drives). Then you can just transfer the data.

The USB drive adapters are sweet! Just be careful shopping, because not all are
are created equal. Some cheapies had laptop drive connectors that aren't keyed, and some brands seem to have issues being correctly detected by the host computer.

I bought a Newer Tech and it's perfect. The manual states that IDE drives should have the jumpers set to "Master" when used with the unit, but I haven't found it necessary.
